Gerrard - Knackered or Disinterested ?

I think we all remember Ballack's performances in the 2002 World Cup and his role in Leverkusen's 'nearly' season. He was immense that year, truly superb. He was hungry, he was aggressive, he was a ****ing wonderful footballer.

Look at him now. A good player, sure, but nothing like what he was, nothing like what he could have gone on to become.

If Gerrard isn't careful he'll end up like Ballack.

Gerrard trots around the pitch with a frown on his face looking largely disinterested with football and life in general. He might fancy a shot now and then and occasionally he'll get out of second gear to make a forward burst, but by and large he doesn't offer an awful lot. He was **** and lazy at Reading the other week and he was **** and lazy again today.

What happened to that rampaging, angry, hugely influential monster of a man we saw emerging in the Houllier's last season in charge ? When was the last time you saw Gerrard make a tackle ? I cant even remember the last time he even tracked back for ****s sake.

Gerrard's development, for whatever reason, has been stunted.

He's either totally knackered or genuinely cant be bothered anymore.

    I dont know.

Is Rafa man enough to drop him then? Isn't that the real problem?

When the last big name to be dropped? by any of the big teams actually thinking about it, it seems it doesn't happen anymore, just **** them off to the ressies for 2 weeks, that'll put the big jessies back in their place.

Too much of that player power thing again.

I think Gerrard is using the 'out of position' stuff as an excuse to sulk.

He basically has a free role wherever he plays, left, right, center, up front. It doesn't matter.

It pisses me off to see such a great player look so apathetic.

He himself said he felt fatigued at the start of the season, and that his form suffered as a result.

He was absolute dog**** today, but so was more than half the team - I don't know if that was down to the heat, the lack of something really important at stake or if the players are sub-conciously thinking of Chelsea - but whatever the reason I'm sure he will be the complete opposite when he lines up in the CL semi-final.

If it was a one off fair enough, but he's been like that all season.

I think it's a topic which warrants discussion.

Probably not because it will become a SCDNW thread.

As was said earlier in the thread, I think dropping him for a couple of games would be a good option. It would give him some extra rest, and might spur him on when he next steps out onto the pitch.

slight overreaction me thinks, true he was **** today and should have come off, especially considering he didn't play vs PSV, I would have expected a bit more from him today. However the comparison with Ballack is off the mark, and i'm sure you were using as an exaggeration. I'm putting his last two performances down to being asked to play off the striker, a role in which he isn't too familiar with really. I wouldn't say there is anything wrong with his development, but he probably be happy to see the back of this season, and give a better account next.

Agreed with some points. He's had a piss poor season tbh. Very inconsistent, rarely fired and has lacked that spark that makes him special. Before this season I argued that I felt he was the most complete player on the planet. But it's hard to argue that on this season's form.

It's been a tough season off the back of the world cup... it's affected a lot of players this year to be honest.

Rafa should have done what Fergie does and send key players on a mid-season holiday for a few weeks.

Stevie has always had that gurn on his face his whole career.

He also played in an unfamiliar position today.
