The closest I came to the tragedy was being asked to serve on the altar at the funeral of my infant school teacher's son.

The closest I came was nearly being crushed to death, being stretchered off and, worst of all, losing a good friend, Alan "Mally" Johnston.

RIP Mally and the other 95. YNWA.

I was studying abroad at the time - I remember vividly the horror at hearing the first reports, the sickness of waiting for news of my brother, the half-guilty relief at hearing of his escape. The day and its aftermath will always be an essential part of the fabric of our great city and team.
Amidst the anger at media and police there must also remain gratitude to the millions around the world who sent their condolences and showed their respect and to the many people of Sheffield who looked after our lost and mourning.
God bless the 96 and their loved ones. We will never forget you.
