Can We Raise Our Game On Demand?

Not too sure if someone else has posted something similar; however, I am concerned by the flatness of our recent performances. Sure some players have their minds on the semi-final and are probably trying to avoid injury or exhaustion. Nonetheless when the semi comes around, can we shake off the lethargy of our recent performances and raise our game?

Chelsea are challenging in all four fronts and again grabbed another late winner, so tiredness is not hindering them. They will be coming to the game already running, whilst it looks like we might be starting from a standing start.

If you look at the start of the season we found it very hard to adjust from preseason form and lost a number of vital points. Just a slight concern, probably nothing.

On a completely unrelated note. Does anyone know why the Youth cup is deemed more prestigious that the U18s league? You always hear of how the current crop of united players and Owen won the Youth Cup but never of how the teams performed in the league.

If we continue playing like we did against City, it will be tough to raise our game when needed. The players need to play competitive games to keep their sharpness levels near their optimum levels. I'm no fitness trainer of the likes but I'd assume it would be pretty hard to regain that match sharpness if you ease off.

As for the Youth Cups, I've always asked myself that question. The league should be the bread and butter isn't it ?

Chelsea hardly hit the ground running IMO and it quite often takes them until the 88th min to get serious.

And yes we can and will raise our game when the big games kick off.
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

iits been a problem for nearly 20 years now!! We ust dont seem to be up for it in some games. Scum go out and destroy teams then sit back wish we could do the same.

Hopefully a couple of big names in the summer will help

          I know what you mean!!

Our players don't seem motivated for the league games atm and only a few are playing for places for the Chelsea game. Hopefully we will get back on track at Anfield on Weds and play some good attacking football

I posted something very similar in the man city thread and it is something that concerns me.

There will be NO problem with motivation in the semi's. Hope that answers your question

It's not the motivation that concerns me, it's form. You just can't turn it off and on like a tap.

We havn't been playing badly mate. The last 2 matches were a bit stale but that, as you say, is because they have Chelsea on their minds but it's not as if we've been out of form for 10 or so matches. I don't see any problems. We have 2 home matches coming up before Chelsea (Boro and Wigan)in which i think we will put on a couple of good displays to warm up for the big one.

It must be difficult for the players to focus on the League Games at present. We've assured CL next year.

I'm sure once we play Chelski in SF, everyone will be up to it and you will see a different Liverpool out there

Rafa's side has proven that they are up to it in the Big Games. It's the meaningless ones in between that poses a problem

The youth league isn't nationwide and the youth cup is

The atmos at both semi's will raise thier games, It doesnt help the players when the crowd is so flat like the last 2 games. If the 1st game is predictably boring then the 2nd will be a classic due to the crowd again. Will lightning strike twice in the same place though? I kinda think it could go either way, but it wont come down to lack of urgency, either a piece of briiliance or (Drogba at SB, Pennant at Anf) a mistake may decide it.

Was thinking the same thing myself mate. The players should be able to motivate themselves whatever the circumstances FFS. Fair enough against PSV, but in the league we are still playing for pride- & 3rd over the Gooners for a 2nd successive season is good for us psychologically. You don't just turn into a championship winning side over night, it needs to be nurtured over years (unless you've got unlimited finds a la Chavski)
                          3rd place. Worst champions ever.
