    Pennant vs. SWP

OK, I know that Pennant is our new winger and that he's (IMO) becoming one of the best right wingers @ Liverpool since Macca... But I've got a question...

I watched the Community Shield and saw both him and Shaun Wrong-Phillipps...

Who do you think is better and why?

I think Pennant has the talent to be better, it just depends on whether he can keep out of trouble.
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

Are you watching Manchester United? Are you watching Chelsea? This is Liverpool F.C taking over the bloody world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, McManaman wasn't really a right-winger was he? Well...He played on the right (or left) for the first three seasons (1991-1994), but it was his free role roaming all over the pitch that defined him.

As for the SWP vs Pennant question, contrasting style of right-wingers. Wright-Phillips is all about getting past his man, getting to the byline and getting a cross in. His game is about pace and nimbleness. Pennant contributes in a slightly different manner. He is obviously not as fast. He can't get past his marker as well as Wright-Phillips. But he is definately a better crosser of the ball and a better defender.

Right now, I would take Wright Phillips given the choice. But Pennant isn't a bad option either...

Both have the potential to be very good players, it is hard to split them so I suppose it is down to who applies themselves the better of the coming years.

I'm gonna be biased and say Pennant.

Simply because of the quality of crosses he puts in.

As for skill and movement, i'd take SWP but he can't deliver the killer ball that Pennant can. So overall i'd rather have Pennant.

Different players IMO so difficult to say who is BETTER. I think Pennant is better for US, as in he does a better job than SWP would for us. Pennant has great ability as a true winger, which Liverpool have been crying out for for ages. SWP is without doubt the more nimble, quicker and probably more skillful. In saying that, Pennant also has the ability to get past players and whilst he's not as fast, his game doesn't rely on trickery to beat a man, cut inside etc. He is able to if necessary, get past someone and whip a deadly ball into the box, or pass back inside for a marauding Stevie G to pick up

So, in summary, I think Pennant is the better option for us and personally speaking, I wouldn't swap him for SWP

Currently both are nothing more than very talented but unproven players. Neither have done much in the PL, both appear to have the talent to be really excellent players.

SWP currently looks less likely to develop as he seems to lack confidence at Chelsea and Jose does not appear to trust him.

I would disagree with Pennant being better defensively, SWP did a very good job for Man City as a wing back.

Without a doubt SWP has caused the bigger impact on the Premiership than Pennant. Before Chelsea came in for him he was one of the brightest talents in the league - he's made a bad career move, but if he could get playing regularly again I think he would again have a big impact in the league.

Pennant for me is a different player - less likely to score goals and to beat players, but has the ability to play the killer cross and early pass.

Out of the two of them, I think we probably needed a Pennant type player more than a SWP type player.

I havent seen Pennant reach the heights that SWP did at Man City.Pennant has settled well and had a couple of great games its early days but think if SWP came to liverpool he could have been class.....now he will be wasted and we will see JP take his england squad place

The problem with SWP is his rubbish final ball, the same cannot be said of Pennant.

                    I'd take Pennant.

On occasion SWP was awesome for Man City - caused all sorts of problems for defences and scored some right screamers - if he can get away from Chelsea I think he'll come good again.

Definately, SWP carries a bigger goalscoring threat than Pennant does, but is more likely to roam a bit, I think Rafa likes that Pennant sticks out on the wing all the time and can still be effective.

                              That's the only similarity?

How about "both incredibly short and could pass for 12 years old?"
