I'm not sure it is fair to label Arsenal along with everyone else. Admittedly they for a long while have had a policy of bringing in young prospects from abroad but they have coached them into a style of play and a love of the club. They have a stream of at least first team squad players through this route (Djorou, Senderos etc.) Part of this succes has been the use of foreign feeder teams, which IMO can be used to replace the idea of a reserve team in the lower leagues, in combination with loaning out a lot of players to a single team (this season a group were sent to Birmingham).Originally posted by friedk View PostSadly, unless our reserves are allowed to play in a lower division, the chance of anyone "making it" is very difficult.
Just look at this site as one example, we are talking about needing an Alves or an Eto'o, so where does that leave an Anderson or a Lindfield.
I don't think the likes of Gerrard or Owen or Fowler made it, I think they always had it and we were extremely lucky to have them on our books. It's very much the same with Rooney.
I think the only one who "made it" was Carra.
It would take a major overhaul of the way the Reserves are run if a stream of young talent is to make it through the Liverpool ranks. And that is the same for United, Arsenal and Chelsea. There just isn't the time or the patience for it to happen anymore.
For a big team the academy should probably look to bring through a stream of players that bring in an income from sales and pay for it's existence every year and then every 5 years say one first team talent such as Carragher/Gerrard who save the club a vast amount of money that would be needed to bring in an equivalent.
The current batch seem to have a few who might make the former category and lets be honest very few people saw just how good Carra could be at the equivalent time in his career.
I hope we continue the policy we have this season of loaning players out to get experience. Thinking about Hammill; maybe we could get a reserve team in the scottish league - surely that breaks no rules?"The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."
