must be something about sponsorship, maybe the sponsorship rules weren't as liberal as they are now?

Oh, I don't know. The dentist theory sounds pretty convincing to me.
          .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

"Injuries weren't the only problems with the lack of tickets, a pitch not condusive to flowing football and also French television's insistence that no advertising could be shown on the shirts of the teams involved. In the end Liverpool's sponsor Hitachi were not allowed to be on the kit and the makers, Umbro, had their logo blocked out by a white strip."

Phil Thompson mentions it in his book - most of the players ripped the stickers off as soon as the match was over, but he didn't 'cos he knew he couldn't because he'd be collecting the cup and didn't want to get the club into trouble.
