Do we really think Gerrard hates.......

    ......playing on the right?

I only watched the first half of the England game last night but it stuck me how much Gerrard roamed about and caused all sorts of problems, with him on the right and hargreaves playing then Lampost should have outshone stevie, but once again he was put in his place by the dynamic ability our captain has...

Im sure at first Stevie hated playing there but as the season went on and Momo came into form he must have twigged what Rafa has seen....With Stevie on the right he has all of a sudden been allowed the free role that he deserves, and this still means we dont leave gaps in midfield when he does roam because Alonso and Momo are there with Finnan behind coveing him so well (and Momo's legs making sure Finnan isnt doubled up on)

now whilst we all scream for us to play Stevie in the middle, I wonder whether in fact he is best on the wing with 2 up top and momo and Xabi in the middle, theres far too much for the opposition to take care of without a winger that roams all over the park and has the ability of gerrard, with one up and the support of gerrard it makes it a lot easier for people to try and get nearer to him as his movement is from inside to out......players are so used to wingers or wide men staying wide that they sometimes pick up on his movement too late....

Pennant is without doubt a great option but one that we can use selectively against certain opposition/in certain situations, it really does give us a dynamic look to our play and lineup that will cause damage...the players have worked hard on this sort of flexiable formation and finally Rafa has the players to fit the system, rather then fitting a system to the players that he has had to do in the past....

It worked well last night because Neville can cover on the right as stevie goes wondering., Finnan does the same

Gerrard in the first half was allover the place he looked fantastic.

i saw some of the england game last night and he had a shot at goal and he was pretty central

that's where i'd like to see him as he's more dangerous there, we have Pennant for crosses now

Even though Gerrard starts on the right I believe Rafa gives him licence to cut in when we are attacking. When it comes to defence he stays on the right to help Finnan out.

he always roams into the midfield, he didn't play out wide for many minutes of the game, neville had more responsabilities as a defender and in attack, we can play that way against lesser oponents not the one's with dangerous left wingers...

McLaren's team is still better than the one in Germany and they would have beaten Portugal with that team but its still not the best
                  it should be:
                  -----------Heargraves---------
                  Lennon-----------------Cole
                  -----------Gerrard
                  --------Crouch-Rooney/Defoe

A bit worried about Stevie's relationship with McClaren actually:

STEVEN GERRARD spoke of his joy at playing in Steve McClaren's first England side and insisted: "We've got to play as a team."

Gerrard was used on the right in the 4-0 mauling of Greece last night - a role similar to that he plays at Anfield.

Gerrard took great pleasure in following McClaren's instructions to the finest detail and now that David Beckham's spell on England's right side is all but over, the Liverpool captain is ready to start making up for lost time.

"I enjoyed it," said Gerrard. "I knew the job that the boss wanted me to do. I spoke to him and he told me that he wanted me to get forward.

"He told me not to be scared to try things and that's what I did. It worked out. I loved it. That's me. Getting forward, being free.

"It's not a complete free role. I've got a responsibility to get back and help Gary Neville.

"But the manager pulled me a few days ago and told me that he wants me to start doing for England what I do for Liverpool.

"Maybe we've been guilty about playing too much as individuals in the past. It hasn't worked out.

"But against Greece, you saw a good team performance from start to finish. We passed the ball well, set a high tempo and we've set a standard for the future."

I guess you'd do anything for him after that. :whatever:
