    Arbeloa's costly blunder

Other than sloppy passes (esp. in the first half) the only time i lost my rag was for the goal we conceded.

Ok, it was a mistake and the lad probably knew it straight away, but it was such a basic defensive mistake it was very worrying.

Drogba stretched us and it was clear where the ball was going to go. The RB, in this instance Arbeloa must have knew he needed to make the penalty spot and face the danger... instead he only ambled in (and he simply must have been aware of the presence of Cole) and let Cole in goal-side. Any defender knows if you let a player goal-side of you, you are ****ed - it's rule no.1.

Disclaimer: I haven't seen any threads from last night so sorry if this has already been discussed at length

Not blaming him, but Carra got caught in no man's land.

He should've either helped out Agger, or dropped back to help out Arbeloa.

Not much he could've done though.

He was doubling up, trying to mop up the loose ball. I can see why he did it.

You're right though he cost caught in between in the end.

Is a part of the problem that cost us the goal. You could see that Agger tried to avoid making to much contact with Drogba because he knew as soon as he did that then Drogba would had gone down screaming like he had been killed and Agger would probably got booked for that.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Arbeloa actually stopped and looked over his shoulder because he thought Cole must have drifted off him towards the back post , he probably couldn't beleive he was that faster than him, unfortunately as he did it Cole ran past him and the ball fell perfectly into his path.

Arbeloa was shocking last night. No way should he have let Cole get in ahead of him.

But Carra getting caught in no man's land didn't help either.

Agger was at fault for the first goal.

Of course Riise, Arbeloa and Carragher could have done more, but even so, Agger has to shoulder the blame.

Drogba had far too much pace and power for the lad, he then turned him inside the area and put it on a plate for Joe Cole...

I hope Agger learnt something from last night.

Arbeloa has played well in all games prior to this one. Pity he was off-form for the wrong match

Thankfully we only shipped 1 goal yesterday. The way we were playing it could have easily been 3 or 4.

A more experienced defender would've known he was fighting a losing battle, and would've fouled Drogba 50 yards from goal.

Agger won't do the same mistake again. You learn by making mistakes like this, next time he will foul him 50 yards from goal and take a booking, in my opinion of course.

Was thinking the same myself. He's been excellent so far, and last night was a slip up. Same for Agger.

As you say, we only conceded 1, it could have been more. But we're not out of this tie just yet.

Maybe not 50 but at least 30. He should have him when he got the ball and realised that he was too close to him

Yep, I was screaming at Agger (or rather, at my telly) to foul him. I would've done. Straight through the c*nt.
