    Heighway leaves Reds academy post

Steve Heighway will step down out as Liverpool's academy coach following the Reds' FA Youth Cup victory on Thursday.

Liverpool beat Manchester United on penalties in the final to seal their second successive triumph and Heighway said: "It's nice to go out like this."

Heighway, 60, has been in charge of Liverpool's youth set-up since 1989.

He brought through the likes of Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen but the club's academy has recently been criticised by boss Rafael Benitez.

Heighway also enjoyed a glittering playing career at Anfield between 1970 and 1981 and has not ruled out staying on at the club if an appropriate job can be found.

I have spent 29 years of my working life at Liverpool. If they have something of value they want me to do, that allows me the freedom to do some of the things I want to do, I would be more than happy to stick around

    Steve Heighway

"I feel very emotional," he said. "It will be unbelievably difficult to go. I don't have to go but the time is right.

"I don't really have any plans for the future. Sometimes even boys need a new face. I have been around the staff here for 18 years now and maybe it is time they listened to someone else.

"It is up to the club to decide whether they would like me to stay in some capacity.

"We have new owners who may not want me around.

"But I have spent 29 years of my working life at Liverpool. If they have something of value they want me to do, that allows me the freedom to do some of the things I want to do, I would be more than happy to stick around."
"The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Winning the Youth Cup two seasons in a row obviously is too much success for Rafa.

Heard a few things on the grapevine which suggest that the new owners are consulting rafa about staff change throughout the entire club. Could be the first of many to leave.

If DIC had taken over, everyone from the chief financial officer down was expecting to be replaced.

Why don't the owners/Rafa want him around?

What type of role would be suitable for him? Scouting Chief?

I think he had a slight dig at the amount of youth teams who actually get their chance yesterday in the post match interview saying that his captain was good enough for the first team. I would think he is still some way off, they were playing against boys last night, not men.
Will be sad to see him leave, especially as he has such close ties with the club and has achieved alot as a player with us in the past.
however, if there are not many getting their chances, we have to allow Rafa to set is up so there more who do get their chances. Id hate to see the team unity in the youths disappear though. Id like to see it as mostly local lads at youth level who grow up together, much like last night.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

It was in the Pink Echo over the weekend that Elias will NOT take Heighway's position and its more likely to be Alex Miller.

Any clues as to who would be the new first team coach then?

Yeah I thought I read something about that Milky.

It really does concern me this. There may not have been a flood of youngsters coming through the ranks in recent years, or even a trickle, but these things do tend to be cyclical in nature.

I really am not convinced that letting Rafa rip it up and start again is the way to go. It's natural to assume he wants to try and institute something akin to his experiences at Real Madrid but it's not exactly been a stunning success for them in recent years. Looking at their team from last week their starting XI had 3 players that had come through the ranks, 1 more than our normal starting XI.

in fairness, he hasn't reall been producing players good enought o make it so it's time for a change.

Whilst it is widely "believed" Elias would take over there was a piece on the Football Echo last week or the week before that suggested he wouldnt be taking over as he prefers the scouting / recruitment side of things
