Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia has emerged as a target for Newcastle United.

The Journal says Hyypia is wanted by Toon boss Glenn Roeder, particularly if he fails to convince Portsmouth to part with Sol Campbell.

The 33-year-old, like Campbell, has plenty of top-level experience and is also capable of organising a back four, something Roeder believes will help the development of his young defenders like Steven Taylor, Peter Ramage, Paul Huntington and David Edgar.
