Marcos Cafu is certain that Milan will make up for their painful 2005 defeat to Liverpool when the two teams meet in the Champions League Final yet again.
The defender was a part of the Rossoneri side who threw away a three-goal lead in the Istanbul finale before they were defeated on penalties, but is out for revenge on May 23 in Athens.
“I promise you that we will do everything to beat them and try to forget that defeat. What happened in Istanbul was unbelievable, one of those things that won’t happen again,” said Cafu to uefa.com.
“That match represents a moment which is hard to describe. It was like taking a shower in cold water, or as if a piano had fallen on to your head.
“I was destroyed, but it is part of this great game called football,” continued the former Roma man.
The 36-year-old Brazilian signed a new contract with Milan last week, which ties him to the Rossoneri until June 2008, but admits that he has yet to decide on what will happen afterwards.
“I might end my career here in Milan, but there is a possibility of going back to Brazil,” explained Cafu, who praised his teammate Paolo Maldini for his will and determination in the game.
“He is an inspiration for all players who are 30 and think they can’t play any more. Paolo works hard every day and has such a positive attitude, his dedication is an example to us all.”
Cafu arrived in Italy in 1997 and spent six years in the Roma jersey, before joining the San Siro giants in 2003.
