Firstly, it's pure speculation that we are signing Jagielka. Secondly, he is far better than just a 'journeyman' as anybody would know if they've actually watched him and thirdly, I think Benitez realises that we need more steady players with spirit and guts like Finnan and Carragher for some of the battles away from home in the Premiership.

As for "final nail in Rafa's transfer coffin", Rashid I know you have a hard earned reputation on the internet for talking ****e but that's up there with your 'best', fella...

Hehe you are a funny guy Rash

If he comes in it will be to bolster the squad and replace outgoing fringe players. Nothing more, nothing less.

Sheffield United midfielder Michael Tonge isn't expected to stay with the Blades in the Championship next season.

Liverpool and Wigan are preparing bids for Tonge. The midfield player rejected a move to Anfield 18 months ago but is desperate to remain in the top flight to enhance his England prospects and will command a fee in the region of £4m.

Rafa's 'idea' is to use the 'possibility' of him being able to do that on the bench. So having one Jag as a sub means we've got keeper, the whole back line and midfield covered in one, meaning that with Eto'o and Villa starting, Kuyt, Voronin and Crouch are all free to sit on the bench next to Momo

whoops, didn't see that before I posted.

              Great minds tho Polo

As for Tonge, he's ****e. Put him in my fantasy team early in the season as he was cheap and thought he'd get a few goals, boy was I wrong. He was utter wank...I remember him being quite talented around the last time we were linked, then didn't he score against us in the cup? He just doesn't seem to have taken his game on at all.

I actually wouldn't be that much against Jagielka, he'd be a very solid (and committed) backup and useful to have. If spending £5m on him instead of buying 2 utility players, freeing up more for attackers, I'm all for it

Jagielka is a good player and I would like to see us sign him.

He can play in a lot of positions but I think he would be a decent buy as a long term replacement for Finnan at right back

Jagielka is a good player but we have Arbeloa as our utility defender now. I guess Jagielka would be better centreback cover but I really don't see him wanting to come to us to sit on the bench.

I want us to get the front line signings sorted before we look to negotiate deals for backup players.

if you have seen jags in goal i doubt it!!
Not a bad player but we are going to be buying a few players this summer and dont see the need to buy for areas that dont need improving.

I'm guessing you didn't see Arbeloa at Depor then. Whenever he played centre back next to Lopo/Juanma he was very very impressive and very solid. I haven't seen the most of Jagielka so I can't say who'd be better but Arbeloa is no monkey at centre back, imo he is a very good player there from his games I saw at Depor when he played there.

If Sami decides he's off we'll need another defender, plus Arbeloa has started to look a bit ropier than he did at first. The fact he could be our bench keeper would just be a sexy alternative. And I think he's pretty decent in goal!

Something to add, if we're going for a defender I'd prefer 2 things.

first off if its a versative defender i'd prefer they were a left back and a centre back. We've had more problems at left back than right imo. There is talk of Alves being bought so having this kind of player makes it sound even more ridiculous.

Then someone with quality who will be able to challenge Carra and Agger for a first team spot and get a couple of games here and there.

I'd personally just buy Milito or someone of his quality for the centre back, so a very good hard player and then grab Puerta whom cold fill the left wing and play at left back when needed... Sorted.

When we already have right backs and central midfielders I don't see any reason grabbing this guy especially if he's never going to be a good enough centre back to give anything more than average back up if one of our first team centre backs are suspended/injured/tired. I'd rather have a good enough player to replace someone like Sami when the time comes.
