Liverpool step closer to landing Zaragoza's Milito
tribalfooball.com - May 16, 2007
Liverpool have been alerted to Real Zaragoza's willingness to cash in on defender Gaby Milito.
The Argentina international declared last week that he wanted to join Rafa Benitez's Liverpool, despite rival interest from Barcelona and Juventus.
Zaragoza president Agipato Iglesias has insisted Milito won't leave for less than his £20 million buyout clause, however AS says he is now resigned to accepting a lesser figure for the stopper.
Juventus have offered to triple Milito's current wages, but the centre-half has his heart set on moving to Anfield.

To be fair they just reprint other peoples stories. If you have a problem with discussing speculative rumours just leave the thread. Other people seem to enjoy the discussion and posts like that really add nothing.

any idea how much Milito would cost, and wouldnt he just be third choice behind Carra and Agger anyway?
a damn sight less than 20mil i should hope, as for third choice yes i'd imagine he would be but i'd wager that he'd get more games than hyypia has this season
I've had long-held fears that Milito is too small to be a successful centre-back in the Premiership.
Is it just me?
How tall is he? He looks about 5'9.
That's niave. Being dominant in the air is also about positioning, elevation, timing, ability to hang etc. The most dominant CH in Spain, as I understand it, is Ayala, hardly a giant.
He's a typical Argie defender from what I've seen of the brief highlights here and there of his play, as he's strong, decent in the air, can play a bit and is no nonsense when needed - others may disagree on this assessment though if they have more knowledge of the guy that me.
However, it would surely mean the end at Anfield for Hyypia, and would mean a break up of the growing partnership of Carra and Agger. Milito would add great strength to the back line and would replace Carra, when needed easily, whereas Hyypia is the natural competitor for Agger, but surely there wouldn't be room for all four!?
We should always look to better ourselves, but is there a need for an expensive centre back at the moment when there are other positions that demand improvement first?! I'm currently very happy with the development of the Carra/Agger partnership at the back and we should be looking to spend further up the field first where thre is a more urgent need for a striker, and maybe a winger.
I'd welcome the Milito signing if it came off though, but it would be interesting to see what happens then!
Our real weakness is that Carra is the only player that can really run the defense. Tactically and from a leadership perspective he is unassailable. That's part of the reason I feel sorry for Paletta, he always plays with Sami, whereas I feel he would be 100% better with Carra running the show.
The fact that Paletta has been partnered with Hyypia, one of the best defenders this club has EVER seen, is no real excuse for his frankly shambolic performances.
On the evidence we've seen thus far you'd have to say that Tim Vickery was right in saying that it was far too early for him to move to Europe. He's incredibly raw and desperately needs games.
Next season, we need to either loan him out to a decent club where he's going to get regular football or do the right thing and sell him. He's never going to get any better rotting away in the stands, playing the odd Carling Cup game and he sure as hell doesn't look good enough to be backup for us right now.
