    Zenden's Injured

Zenden set to miss finalMay 18 2007

    by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

BOLO ZENDEN’S Champions League dreams could be shattered after he picked up an ankle injury at Liverpool’s training camp in La Manga.

The Dutch midfielder, who had been earmarked to start against AC Milan next week, was on crutches last night and was today rated very doubtful for the final.

Manager Rafa Benitez has stopped short of declaring Zenden out of the running and says he’ll give the player as much time as possible to recover.

But it now looks like the boss must reassess his selection plans.

“Bolo injured his ankle in training yesterday,” said Benitez today.

“He’s been treated by the doctor and the good news is the swelling is not that bad. We will need to see how it is after more checks today.

“It will be difficult to say he will be fit for the final now, but I won’t say no yet.

“He is strong and determined and it may recover quickly. I still hope he will be okay.

“It will be a big disappointment for him and for us if it’s not possible. Bolo can bring character, experience and tactical knowledge to the team.

“He is one of the good options for the left side, but now we must see how he recovers and decide what to do.”

Zenden’s misfortune may open the door for Harry Kewell to complete an extraordinary return, although Benitez is more inclined to use the Aussie from the bench.

His only other alternative is Mark Gonzalez, although he could push John Arne Riise into a more advanced role.

Meanwhile, Pepe Reina has recovered from the shoulder injury he suffered recently and will be fit to start in Athens.

After recent performances that is a blow for the team and for the lad as well. Gutted for him to miss a huge final so close to the game. Hope he makes it.

Gutted. For the team and for him. I had a vision of him scoring the winner.

Really only leaves Rafa with 3 options
            1. (Most Likely) Play JAR left midfield and Arbeloa left back
            2. Harry Kewell starts
            3, Mark Gonzalez (Least likey)

I wish we still had Stephen Warnock.

I awoke this morning to a text from a mate that said "Bolo on crutches, gonna miss the final!".

There was nothing on the news, AT ALL, about this, until this report by Bascombe.

I'm really confused. How did he know this ****? I thought he was talking bollocks as usual.

His last text was on about Kaka being doubtful? "Heard a little rumour that Kaka will miss the game!".....

never ever thought I'd see the day that Bolo being injured would be a blow to the team. Goes to show that we need to strengthen a lot more in the summer.

I think that's a bit unfair. To me it shows that he's started to play well recently and maybe that we have come to appreciate his contribution. He's no speed merchant, he's not a winger but he's been useful as a left-midfielder and has experience.
                        .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

I must stop doing this but I agree.

Zenden is a team player he works hard and defends well he lacks something going forward but you know your always going to get 100% from Bolo.

He is useful and has played well (ish) in the last few games but still, Bolo should never have become so critical for us. We are in need of a LW and Bolo is not that. We'll have enough probs when SG is pushed out wide right and will, in all probability have a bit of sulk about being there and end up deserting his position, without having to worry about Bolo on the left. Milan have tremendous strength down their flanks (Oddo and Jankoluvski) and we need players that will push them back.

Rafa will need to look at the left hand side this summer and make some tough choices. Speedy's place is under threat and Harry, well will he ever be fully fit for us (as good a player as he is)
