Just read my forum related to the work I do and to summerise a Man U fan when answering a post about how Milan should not be in the final due to match fixing etc. said that at least they didn't kill 39 italians and get us all banned from europe. One person called him a typical Man U fan but there were loads mentioning building bonfires and all that nonsense.

I have replied in a very gentle manner as I can't go around upsetting some of these people but I'm fuming.

What response should I have given?

Why not tell him to get a sense of perspective. Point out that hooliganism accompanied most British teams into Europe, not just Liverpool. Many hooligans went along irrespective of who was playing. So it could just as easily have been Manchester United that got us banned, if they had happened to be league champions at the time. Equally it could have been Liverpool players lying on the tarmac on Munich, if we had been champions at that time.

You could add that since somje sort of violent confrontation between opposing fans was always a possibility, there could not have been a worse venue chosen than Heysel, which was already falling down - and with plenty of loose building materials left around that were used as missiles for some time by the hooligans accompanying Juve before the Liverpool fans stampeded. The main part of the Belgian police, meanwhile, were stood down having worked so hard on a demanding assignment escorting the pope. The deaths were caused when the stadium fell on panicked Italian fans, so the stadium owners are at least as culpable as Liverpool FC.

Even if your colleague won't listen to reason, it is probable that there are other people there who do not know these facts, and they at least may hoist them in. Whatever you do stay reasonable, all the more so if the Manc looks to be losing the argument.

Why bother replying at all? You can't reason with those types. You'll just be wasting your breath.

would the mancs have even gotten into the uefa cup during the ban?
because lets be honest,who ever wrote that post does not in the slightest care about "us all".
let him know we done the mancs a favor by sparing them the embarrassment of not only being in our shadow in the league but also in europe.
while wed have been off adding to our european cup haul,theyd have been languishing down around 6th or 7th place in the league.
