Alves and Gabriel Milito close to signing?

    RAFA: NOBODY IS SAFE
    David Maddock In Athens 22/05/2007

RUTHLESS Rafa Benitez has warned his Liverpool side that even winning the Champions League will not spare them from the axe.

The Liverpool manager has vowed to continue rebuilding his team despite reaching their second European Cup final in three years.

He is ready to rip apart the current squad to draft in the big-name players he insists are required to bring the Premiership title back to Anfield for the first time in 18 years.

"I know we can improve, and we will do that by bringing in new players with character, quality and experience," he said.

"We know we have to progress, and we need to keep going forward.

"I am happy with my players, and I think we are going in the right direction, but this final is just a stopping point on the way. We need to improve to challenge in the Premiership.

"We want to achieve even more. It is important not to think that by getting to the final we have done everything, because we have the potential to be one of the biggest clubs in Europe in every way.

"We are already one of the most famous names in football, but we have the chance to take advantage of our position - it will be an important summer."

Benitez will be free to sign the players he wants after being given a massive injection of funds from new American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett. He aims to bring in a top class striker of the quality of Samuel Eto'o or Fernando Torres, and he is also close to landing Brazil star Daniel Alves and Argentine defender Gabriel Milito, both of whom have had outstanding seasons in Spain.

The Anfield chief is also interested in signing Charlton striker Darren Bent. With the exception of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Dirk Kuyt, no player in the current squad can feel completely safe.

Jerzy Dudek will leave in the summer, and the likes of Bolo Zenden, Mark Gonzalez, Sami Hyypia, Scott Carson, Harry Kewell, and even one of the strike pair of Craig Bellamy or Peter Crouch, and influential midfielder Xabi Alonso could be sweating over their futures.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Sweeping changes is just the way the press tries to sensationalize everything. Yes we'll sign players, but I can't see that many players out, apart from the usual suspects.

Kewell and Gonzales will be staying, as well as Sami Hyppia.

I can't see Hyypia staying if we sign Gabriel Milito. He would be fourth choice then. I can see Rafa loan out Gonzalez to a spanish club or maybe use him in a deal with Zaragoza for Milito.

I've got a feeling that Sami will stay for next season with Palletta going out on loan. The lad deffo sems to need games, and he's really not ready to be getting those games with us. So Sami to stay as cover, Milito in, Palletta out on loan. Easy.

I retain the hope that Hobbs will step up to a position to be considered 4th choice. I doubt that who ever is in that position will get many games. I agree about Palleta for him to ever make it he needs to have a season of first team football now.

I can't see the sense in Gonzo going to spain on loan unless it's to put him in the shop window with the view to sell. If Rafa thinks that he's got a future with us he would be better off on loan in the prem with Sunderland and hopefully Roy Keane teaching him to toughen up a bit. Just a thought
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

I think Sami will be going.
I'll be pleased to see Alves brought in, I'm not convinced by Milito.

would be an ideal situation alright, I also agree that there is nothing to gain by letting Gonzales go to Spain when he hasn't properly settled in England.

Gonzalez only has a contract for three years, so I'd be very surprised to see him get loaned out. I reckon he'll either stay put or get sold on. My bet is on the latter happening.

Personally, I cant see him ever getting up to much with LFC, i'd ship him on. I think the player would also be content with a move back to Spain.
