    Sylvain Distin?

Don't know what to make of this, but it says in this morning's Mirror that Rafa is trying to do a deal to sign Distin from Citeh under Portsmouth's noses.

Not so sure myself, but a squad player perhaps?!

    Here it is:

    RAFA GOES FOR DISTIN
    By Alan Nixon 23/05/2007

RAFA BENITEZ is making a late bid to sign Manchester City contract rebel Sylvain Distin - to snatch him from under Portsmouth's noses.

The Liverpool manager has spoken to Distin's advisers about a move, although the Frenchman will face a fight to get into the club's starting line-up.

The defender, 29, would also have to settle for less than the £3million-a-year he is being offered by Pompey.

But Distin's family are happy in the north-west and he may fancy his chances of breaking into the side.

Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger are paired at centrehalf but Distin could even slot in at left-back.

He is seen as a natural replacement for Sami Hyypia, the veteran Finn who will be allowed to leave one year before his contract ends.

Distin's versatility makes him an attractive option for the squad-rotating Spaniard.

Replacement for Hyypia?!? Seems a strange one, but he's been a good player for Citeh

For free he would be a good addition to the squad. I would rather him than spend millions on Milito.

Very highly rated in footballing circles. Yet to be tested at the very top level but certainly would be a great addition to the squad.

At least he's well used to the Premiership and wouldn't need time to settle in a new country.

A freebie too so might not be a bad option as he's been one of Citeh's best players over recent years.

Taffy thinks to himself that it wouldn't take much to be one of Citeh's best now would it!

He has a cousin who plays as a striker for Brondby.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

I would gladly take him ona free instead of spalshing 8mill on Milito.

He would be a very handy 3rd choice CB.

I remember us being link to him before - he's a good strong and experienced defender - for free it would be a bargain

They have however had a good defence in the last two years - mostly down to Dunne and Distin.

Distin is not good enough. Another **** freebie.

Distain IS good enough, as a freebie. He's even good enough to spend a couple of million on, IMO. If he's happy to play as part of a rotating defence system, then he'd be a great signing

He would also allow for a back 3 with wingbacks [AFII= Alves & Lahm AFII] should the need arise. We need a 3rd centre back, we've seen how exposed Sami's lack of pace leaves him, and it looks a certainty that he will be allowed to leave early to get regular football. Which I think is a good thing, its a gesture on our part

But should he go, then we're left with Palleta, who clearly isn't ready, one of the reserves (who are still reserves for a reason) or a makeshift centre half in Arbeloa or Aurelio.

For a title challenging side, these aren't enough options. Look at Chelsea for example. Gallas goes, and they're screwed if either Carvalho or Terry gets injured.

My Citeh supporting mates say he's fast but his distribution is very poor as can be his positional play and he's prone to make mistakes. Dunne covers for him well. As cover for Carra/Agger he could be an option but he certainly wouldn't be first choice.
