Rafa could be attempting to do a Houllier

... Unwittingly! Rafa's eagerness to tell fans he will overhaul the squad could be his undoing. Yesterday night was more apparent than any other that we needed a goal poacher. Milan had it and it prooved to be crucial.

I dont think we need to overhaul the squad, but buy a max 4 quality players in the positions we are weak at, thats on the wings and upfront.

Rafa knows what he is doing. With money to compete with Chelsea, Real, Barca and Man Utd, he will pull ahead. Houllier was a different man with a much worse system.

I have no doubt whoever Rafa brings in, they will be largely of a higher calibre than we have already be signing under his guidance.
I also think again, that our early season form could be a problem though and we finish strong, I doubt if we make big changes to the team that we will win the title, but I am convinced that we will get even better next season, especially after the team settles into the squad rotation.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

Voronin, Crouch and Kuyt + another will be our strikers next season. Add to that we'll buy a quality LW and RW, CB. With Leto and Leiva already signed, that's 6 new players for next season.

I don't think Rafa is doing a Houllier at all.
He is basically stating what he, the majority of players in his squad, the owners and all of us fans know!

Quite simply he is saying back me or loose me.....if you want us to do well trust me!

Like Houllier as much as i do, he always came up with some odd things "We are 10 matches from greatness", "two or three more players".
Rafa has never said anything about greatness, and has never mentioned how many players away he is, but he knows where improvement is needed.

The worst thing about Houllier was when we just needed those 2 or 3 players in came Diouf, Diao and Cheyrou! I doubt Rafa will bring in players of that calibre....

I don't believe so. He needs to partially rebuild the squad with quality to complete in all major compitions in the season. Naturally the priority will the the league followed by Europe and the FA cup. We don't have solid and consistent performers in many areas who can up on anad change the game or start a game and let the other key player take a rest. Currently we don't have the luxury of resting players key players and replacing them with players who will do the job and get a result.

It all comes down to results. Had Houllier had gotten the right results, regardless of who he bought then nobody would have said anything. Same with Rafa, if they succeed and get trophies, regardless of who he bought he'll be fine.... if on the other hand.... supporters can be fickle!
"That's how I found myself on the Kop that day I had my blue-and-white scarf safely tucked away inside my coat as I listened to Liverpool songs and swayed with the masses.

Then City scored and I screeched and this big bloke, a Liverpool supporter, made towards me and I thought he was going to throttle me. But he just pulled my scarf from under my coat so it lay on the outside, and said: "You should always be proud of your colours, lad."

Our net spend under Rafa has been £46m in three seasons.

In the same period Chelsea's net spend has been around £120m, and this after a year that set new records in transfer fees.

United already had Scholes, Giggs, Neville, Ferdinand and Ronaldo, to which they added Rooney, Carrick & Vidic (who we missed out on) among others.

The only team we have outspent in that period is Arsenal, and we have finished ahead of them in the past two seasons. In that time they have still beaten us to the signings of Walcott and Denilson

Simao, Alves, Vidic, Owen are all players we have missed out, and I'm sure there are many more.

Rafa's statement is a reality check, without both correct backing and speed in the transfer market, we will not win the league.
