I do remember that if one of those defenders had ran on they may have been able to clear it as it was a slow shot.

I was beginning to think I was the only one who spotted that. Both Finnan and Carra could have easily prevented the second goal if they hadn't been standing about waiting to see what happened when Pepe went to close Inzaghi down. Both w4ere stood on the edge of the area and had ample time to cover the line. That said we got no luck, first goal was a fluke and a handball regardless of who was at fault for the freekick and the ref gave us nothing, including short changing us on time and keeping that **** Gattuso on the pitch.

    Onwards and upwards.

In case I'm included in that i'll clarify that I wouldn't swap Carra for any other defender in the world. He's quality and we all make mistakes,as he has admitted after the game

replacing carra is madness, i was pissed off with the way he played in the final but he is a vital part of our squad and would be hugely hugely missed if he left, by the fans and the players. he is the vocal leader in the team, a role that stevie will never be able to step into. its impossible to count the number of times he has come through for us and given everything he has. when he makes mistakes they are glaring becasue its carra and we've come to expect better. a bit like stevie's dip in form this season, he wasn't dross, we just expect better.

some people have such short memories and want life to mimic their xbox and playstation fantasies where they chop and change on a whim. fickle doesn't even cover it

Carra has been very solid and deserves his place in the team and our hearts.
And I think we all know Rafa is looking for someone better or his replacement.

ah no i ****in dont. Carra is second name on the teamsheet.

they are glaring because centre back is a critical position, second only to GK

so the conclusion to the thread title seems to be that the majority think carragher is "above criticism"

I think thats a situation which might hold us back if somebody better - and thats a moderate-sized but VERY REAL group - comes available.

when jc is a squad player covering all the back 4 positions very well, then well be were we want to be

I think rafa shares my view: recognising carraghers qualities but with the ruthlessness to replace him when theres somebody better

Nobody is above criticism, just the majority of us feel it would be exceptionally difficult to replace Carra with someone better, even if there was more talented defenders out there, would they adapt to the hustle and bustle of the Prem and would they play at the top of their game more or less week in week out as Carra does.

Most talk of summer signings has been focused on the attacking third of the pitch.Any CB's bought will be cover for JC and Agger cos Sami is too old IMO

actually I suspect well sign millito (who I reserve judgement on and who I wouldnt necessarily want ahead of carragher) and lose sami. palletta will be 4th choice.

i wouldnt be at all surprised to see millito - or any other really class CB we might sign - get the 1st choice CB ahead of JC. if that happened, expect to see JC take one of the fullback slots. Rafa is very politically astute and - similar to the signing of fowler - is capable of keeping the fans happy with that kind of manouvre

Carragher at fullback would be a terrible decision. He is not a Rafa type or a modern style fullback. I think there that the fact that Carragher has played so many games even when in poor form when we could have played Sami and Agger shows how highly Rafa rates him.

Still I think the best thing to do is accept that we are always going to disagree on this topic as I think you will always find a way to justify your opinion and noone can disuade you which is fair enough. Even if I don't think the evidence you present hold much water.
