    Sign nobody!

Just for discussion - the last two seasons we've made a few signings for the first team - we've got excited and sometimes they've worked and sometimes they haven't

What has been certain is that they have unsettled us and we've gone back in terms of form in the early part of the season.

The old Liverpool way was new signings serving their time in the reserves for a season - they were bought to be long term replacements rather than quick fixes.

From Christmas both seasons we've been the form team but had so much to make up from that we end up 3rd. Is it possible that we could carry on in good form if we just sign nobody?

Chelski's two mega star signiings should be a lesson to us

It would be funny if people on here were creaming themselves over big name signings like Tevez and Eto'o, then instead we actually ended up with Gavin McCann, 2 dodgy Josemi types and Titus Bramble.

Well perhaps not on second thoughts.

a good point but i think that our base is a bit too low in terms of quality. once we get that right then yes i think we need to buy only a couple each year to keep things fresh and we can ease them in.

However my fear is that with new players it will take time to gel and so therefore we wont be contenders for the league

but we do have to address the issue of real quality.

I think we've got enough first team players that should be here at the start of the season, that we will have a much more stable base to start from no matter who else we bring in.

I think we have to work very hard on getting a decent start to the season this time - if that means introducing new players gradually and keeping a core together for the early games, so be it. I'd say left mid and 1 striker can change - otherwise keep the nucleus.
I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.

The lesson of Chelsea's two biggest signings of last summer is that you should only buy players you see fitting into your team dynamic for the coming season. If they are that good you want to sign them anyway you have to be able to change the dynamic in a way that suits them but still results in an overall improvement of the team that makes the investment worthwhile.

There were a number of people on here assuming these new signings would help Chelsea blow everyone away, but there were also a number of people including myself who thought their new signings would not work out purely because there wasn't a clear role for them in Chelsea's team, and that's exactly how it's panned out. Ballack and Lampard's roles conflict and Sheva would have to play as one of two strikers to do well, yet Chelsea's best attacking players the previous season had been their wingers playing off Drogba.

The bottom line is it's not about getting the best player possible in, but the best player for your team in. That's something I feel Rafa excels at, he signs players for specific qualities they have rather than because he wants a player in x position and that player is good enough in general.
