Platini wants turkeys to vote for Christmas

    From the beeb: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...pe/6698805.stm

Platini asks clubs to disband G14

Platini took over as president earlier this year
Uefa president Michel Platini has called for the G14 to disband and drop a number of lawsuits it is supporting.
The G14 represents 18 European clubs, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United all current members.

Platini wants the G14 to air their grievances through a new body - the Professional Football Strategy Council.

"We can stop seeing each other before the courts, we can stop making a spectacle of ourselves in front of the whole of Europe," said Platini.

The G14 has come into conflict with world governing body Fifa over its support for a number of court actions to gain compensation for players injured whilst on international duty.

Belgian club Charleroi have taken Fifa to the European Court of Justice over a player who was injured while on international duty and a similar case is pending involving Olympique Lyon of France.

Charleroi want compensation after Abdelmajid Oulmers was ruled out for eight months after being injured while on duty for Morocco, while Olympique Lyon launched a similar action after Eric Abidal broke his foot playing for France.

Platini added: ""Presidents and heads of the major clubs - let us profit from your great experience and your ideas.

"Tell us about your convictions. Uefa's door is wide open - join us, and I promise you that you will not be disappointed.

"I am convinced that you will hear this appeal, because it is being made in the sense of history, and with progress at the service of football in mind."
I don't like Platini and he has some very dodgy ideas IMO. He's trying to gain more and more power

After the debacle they made of the Champions League final he's lucky the G14 don't ask him to disband. :whatever:

Platini is an power-hungry ego maniac and a yes man to Sepp Blatter. It was a sad day when he beat Leonhard Johanssen.

G14 should tell him nicely to go jump off the cliff or we break away with our very own G14 tournament. Then you can have the likes of Chelski or Roma or Sevilla winning the CL every year. Not that bad and yet not the best. Serves you right if that happens. Oh wait that won't happen even cos you only want the champions of each nation in the tourney... hmmmm that means maybe Steaua Bucharest can rise again then eh Michel?

Platini always was a suave arrogant bufoon. Shame it wasn't him that came up against Harald Schumacher in 1982.

Yes he'll back down if it comes to that - it won't though.

Personally I'd like to go back to the format of only the Champions of each European league gaining entry. Or at very least call it something other than the "Champions League", when 2/3rds of the teams playing in it clearly aren't.

It should just be called "The European Cup".

The old format was good but unfortunaltely it through up too many mismatches and over 2 legs it meant the second legs were poorly attended.
Plus TV execs want to see the best 32 teams in Europe, not the champions of Lithuania* v champions of Iceland*

                    * no offence

I agree. I like the current format. It's just the name; "Champions League" it's a bit gay really.

Though they could do away with the first group stage IMO. It's a bit pointless. Why not give the ranked clubs a bye, make the lesser (unranked) clubs play off. Then when were down to 32 clubs it's straight into a knockout 2 legs cup format. But of course there's less money to be made out of that isn't there?

Yeah most people I know call it the European cup anyway...
LOL take that back some people I talk to mainly americans call it the CL not champions league, just the CL

But your format is similar to a CL qualifier isn't it? and then straight knockout? I doubt it will ever happen!
The problem is then how do you rank the clubs?
And the other thing... they can't ensure the big teams come out of the straight knockouts but they almost can over the group stage.. it's all about money.. and it's the big teams that draw the biggest crowds. Sigh.

no, i think its just right, and actually, loads of clubs bitched when they scrapped the second group stage because of stadium and tv money

getting rid of the first group would cause uproar
