    Hypothetical question

    Would you rather:
    a) We buy the four new players of your choosing this season - cost what may.
    b) We kept the same side as last year but were still coming back to earth after celebrating our sixth European Cup.

Call me unambitious but I'd choose option b. Maybe I'll change my mind this summer, but I'm still mourning the lost glory and am finding it difficult to get enthusiastic about new players, however much star pedigree they have.

Of course the ultimate goal is number 19, but number 6 would have been special. Gather ye rosebuds will ye may, a bird in the hand ... and all that.
I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.

    If a= 19, 20, 21... & 6,7,8...

    Then there is no competition
    We come not to play.

I'd go for A every time. With a few new faces (Tevez, Et'oo, Taylor, Malouda) this team will be capable of challenging and winning no. 19 and adding more Euro glory on the way.

Keep the same team as we have now for next season? NNNoooooooooo!!!!

Going into the new season with the same squad littered with average players holds ZERO appeal to me. It would be a complete disaster so I vote (A).

              A

It's obvious that we need better players and more width. Riise and Zenden on the left is nowhere near good enough and to be perfectly honest neither is Finnan and Pennant on the right. Not if you really want to be a dominant side.

Kuyt and Crouch should be kept but we badly need two top class strikers who both would be better options than Kuyt/Crouch.

I'm also think that we might need a topclass playmaker at CM. Pending on just how good this Lucas guy is. Someone who could put some serious pressure on Gerrard. He badly needs some competition for that CM sloth.

If you really want to compete for the PL it's goodbye to players like Paletta, Mono, Riiise, Zenden, Gonzo, Dudek, Fowler, Bellars, Hyypia and I would even cut Arbeloa and Aurelio.

Players like Finnan, Pennant, Kuyt, Crouch and Alonso should be squad players. That's the level we are looking for.

              ---------------------Reina---------------------------

              xxxxxx----------------Carra-----Agger------------------XXXX

              XXXX----------------Gerrard-----Mascher---------------xxxxx

              ---------------------------XXXX-----------xxxxx-------------

Harsh maybe but I seriously think that we need better players for all those positions.

Finnan is getting old and should be playing less. He offers very little forward. He has a good cross every now and then. 1 shot at goal though out the ENTIRE season says it all though. Never scores. 4 assists is decent but we would be a better side if the opponent had to worry about a potential goalthreat.

Riise just isn't a good enough player overall. He has what Finnan lacks. He is a goal threat. Finnan is his superior in every other department. If only they could be cloned.

              Zenden. Enough said.

Pennant isn't a goal threat. Offers assists but that's not enough when united have a 20 goal player with even more assist at the same spot. Wouldn't be enough anyway but still amazing to think about.

Kuyt/Crouch. We just need better. They should obviously be kept and do their part but we need two clear cut stirkers who both would be more obvious players to throw in the starting XI.

The only point of having decent players is to win something with them ffs!

So I'd take a European Cup win. And if this squad could make it to the European cup final this season then why could it not win something the next season without new signings? No miserable start and no need to bed new players in, we'd stand a better chance anyway. A huge huge huge trophy in the bag, possibly another to come, and we'd have an absolute ****load to spend the next summer.

"If" being the important word - big name imports are no guarantee of success ... and what's cost us the chance of challenging the last few years has been the early-season mess we've got into as we try to incorporate new players. Two seasons ago we still ended up with a points total which could have seen us champions another year. We strengthened the squad, messed up the start of last season but were still in with a shot before firstly the Blackburn result and secondly the Champions League run, knocked us back. I don't think we are that far away and a more settled off-season could give us a chance.
Yes, a top striker and left midfielder could make the difference ... but I miss the feeling of hope that we could win the CL. Those chances won't come along too often.
