    Different requirements for different teams

There are some (ahem) Rash members who seem to feel that because United are after certain players, we should also be after them.

United have now spent around £50m on three players who are effectively cover for the first team with the view to step up in a few years time. The reason for this is that United already have a first team capable of winning the league and can afford the luxury of buying potentially great players who will enforce what they already have. Here is a prediction, United have still yet to make their main Summer signing. The only player they need to step into the side straight away is a striker.

Liverpool don't have a team capable of winning the league, so to go out and buy players who would probably take a few years to settle into the English game (particularly the great youtube pair of Nani and Anderson) would not only be (ahem) Rash it would be stupid because with those players they would suffer because they would be expected to deliver from day one and we would not be any closer to winning the league.

    So what do we need?

Obviously from the European Cup Final we are short of attacking wide players and strikers. We need to find players who can immediately fit into the team while at the same time building up the reserves with potential (Nemeth, Insua etc). Our luxury buys are in the areas where we have strength, being central midfield, defence and goal (I think Carson will leave). That is why we have bought Lucas.

Malouda is a rumour and it would be (ahem) Rash to think otherwise, but I am convinced the bulk of the money we spend will be on attackers and attacking midfielders who are established internationals with European Cup experience.

It's simple really, like shredded wheat.

    Good points......

The fact that the Mancs have spent nearly £50M (and as you say, have yet to sign their main striker) just weeks after winning the league, losing in the FA Cup Final & getting to the CL Semis proves how far behind we are & what an enormous task Rafa has in front of him

These signings have really hit that home....
What do you mean it could've been anyone? Name me one person who's got a grudge against penguins

      Exactamundo.

Who is to say that out of Leto, Lucas, Insua, these Hungarian lads and the youth team we won't get a great player or 2. I think people get slightly deluded that because other english teams aren't in for the young lads we buy that they aren't up to the same calibre. Just have to give them time to see. I'm sure there have been plenty other clubs in europe we've beaten off to sign these young players.

Also, I think United have done us a favour by spending so much so fast. Rafa can say 'I told you so' to G&H and maybe they might even revise their budgets. I've said it before on here, I think we need to spend approx £80m net minimum to get to/above Chelsea and United's level and compete on all fronts.

        Tevez £20m - second striker
        Eto'o £30m - main striker
        M. Richards £12m - Finnan's heir
Milito £13m - more quality centre-half cover or maybe even first choice
        D.Alves £13m - right-wing
        Simao or D. Silva £12m - left-wing

and raise £20m approx. from sales - eg Bellamy £9m, Cisse £5m, Sinama £2.7m, Gonzalez £5m, Le Tallec £1m

Of those you mention at this moment we don't need Milito or Richards so knock 25mil off that and you might have a decent list there, although you might have underestimated Tevez' and Eto'o' values
