Tom Hicks - Uefa Interview (quality) + Stadium info

Here's the deal right now from what I can gather. I wrote it briefly last night when I had the time but I'll expand on it a little now.

The stadium presently is at 61,000 with 1,000 of those seats being for buffer zones between fans.

The negotiations will shortly be under way to increase the capacity to 68,000 (same buffers) all within the present footprint which has been approved. The 7,000 extra seats will be added on the sides.

The design of the stadium will allow expension for up to 80,000 though 76,000 is a more likely number. My conjecture is that these will be added seats in the ends, so we will have pretty much the finished product on the sidelines.

During construction and after the opening, an ongoing environmental impact statement will be put together to hammer out the details of the increased capacity. It won't be easy. My guess is that Tom and George will have to foot the bill for quite a lot of infrastrcuture improvements as part of any deal.

My analogy with the Bombanera was my own, and probably a bit misleading. The bottom line is that this stadium will be a very high one, much higher than what we are used to at Anfield. But, I don't think it will architecturally be like the Bombanera. The triple stand and the steepness of the stands will probably be impossible to create in Liverpool. Safety restrictions won't allow it. Honestly, that Argie stadium may have great atmosphere but it looks like a death trap to me.

Look for an emphasis on the club seats and the luxury boxes. They are the driving force for making the place an economic success. In effect, they'll subsidize the rest of the stadium. They are also a pet favourite of our owners and the experts in the background.

A team will be heading over tomorrow to get the ball rolling on things. The financing plan isn't finalized yet, but there are two teams in the picture for it.

Don't agree. Modern stadium design nearly always sees the first tier of seats, maybe 25/30,000, situated below ground level. This technique is much cheaper and greatly reduces the size of the overrall structure. This wasn't done at OT which is why it's the monstrosity it is. It was used on the Allianz, the Camp Nou, City's ground and many others.
In addition it will take best part of 18 months to excavate the ground and install this first tier which fits in amazingly well with the planning permission problem. ie They've got plenty to do while it's being considered/passed. The planning permission is for footprint, height and capacity. An increase in capacity would mean new planning app same as increase in height or footprint. The design is liited to a degree as well as the club was told the building could not be red and had to be in line with the rest of the park. - remember reading the last bit.

yeah i know what you mean. but i just think there is a brash dismissiveness to it that i just find unappealing and inappropriate.

Personally i like it, but everyone is going to have their own oppinion on these things, and of course they are entitled to it

There's loads wrong with the current Anfield design. The anny road end is nowhere near the size it would ideally be, because of the road behind. The main stand is crap and outdated. There's only the Kop and the Centenary that are suitable for a modern stadium.

The best design for the new ground would be a bigger Kop, with a Centenary style stand going all the way round the other three sides. Keep the Kop as a separate stand and then pack as many people as possible in the other three sides to watch us sing!

You just kinda described the Millennium Stadium, and yes that would do!

there is no doubt in my mind that uefa is a corrupt and hopelessly inefficient organisation but i'm not sure that the owner of a prestigious club like ours should be making public statements about a senior official being a clown. maybe it's just straight talkin good ole boy hicks' way but if what gaillard and uefa say is wrong - and it is generally - then we need to be seen to be above all this name calling crap. it just drives a further wedge between uefa and g14 clubs. so what you might say? long term and for the good of football this might not be a situation that is beneficial.

liverpool is about class on and off the pitch. i'm not sure i want some bush supporting wiseass making public pronouncements like this on behalf of my team.

Maybe people will think twice before crossing us now that they have Big Tom to contend with (rather than the more effete Parry). Nobody wants to be called a "clown" do they!

Spectacular’ new stadium plans to go before council

LIVERPOOL FC co-owner Tom Hicks yesterday revealed that new “spectacular” plans for the proposed stadium at Stanley Park will be submitted to the city council before the end of this month.

A team of US architects have completely re-drawn the plans for the new stadium that will create a spectacular home for the club, Mr Hicks said in an interview in the US.

It is likely the new plans will be delivered to the council offices at Millennium House around June 28 to enable planning officers to assess the revised scheme.

Last night, the city council’s regeneration executive member, Mike Storey, said the city had “struck oil” when the club was taken over by Mr Hicks and his business partner George Gillette.

In the interview, Mr Hicks said he is keen to show fans the finished design for the club’s new stadium, to be built close to the current Anfield ground in Stanley Park.


“The design is now final, it’s spectacular and I can’t wait for everybody to see it,” he said. “I think our fans will love it, it’s very creative arch- itecture, very contem- porary but also unique to Liverpool. It is all centred around the Kop.”


The club’s new home is expected to be finished in time for the start of the 2010 season.


Cllr Storey, who has had a number of briefings about the emerging scheme, said: “There really will be a wow factor when people see the new scheme.


“The design has been radically changed and I am sure that people in the city will realise we have struck oil by having two people with the wherewithal to produce such a stunning scheme.


“They really have got the business experience and the eye for detail that will put the new Liverpool stadium on the world map.”


A spokesman for the city council said last night: “Because the design has changed, a new planning permission will be necessary. We understand that the club will be submitting its new plans within a matter of weeks.”


It is expected that the new design will incorp- orate an expanded cap- acity of up to 68,000 compared to the currently permitted 61,000, with the potential for further expansion in the future.

Sounds really good but a new planning permission could take time.
