What if we got "the next" John Barnes and "the next" Ian Rush? I think we would win the next league title then.Originally posted by DJS View PostI'd love to really believe that only one or even two players could make up the 20 odd points, but i really cant see it.I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.

I'm sure this time last year Man Utd fans weren't very positive about overhauling the Chavs and winning the league.
You need good players - check
You need a few great players - check
You need a good manager - check
You need a good team spirit with a bit of a seige mentality (we seem to be developing that)
then you need a hell of a lot of luck. You need luck with avoiding injuries to key players, avoiding suspensions and avoiding being the victim of poor refereeing decisions.
I think we could do it with a couple of major signings.Originally posted by Gordon Brown

I think we're not to far off. We've got the basis of an excellent squad but there's no doubt that it atill needs a good bit of quality adding to it. Next season would probably be to soon but I think within 5 years we could be there or there abouts.Babel fanclub member # 4!!!

Who would have bet on the Scum winning this year? Even some of their own supporters think they aren't great.
We will definitely win it soon. 2005 was a huge step. New money is another step and the siege mentality is another big ingredient.
Check out Munster rugby winning Heineken Cup 2006 last year for parallels.

Can't believe it. That was a good post.Originally posted by DJS View PostAnother thing we need to do is distinguish between positions that need solidity (which can be cheap) and positions which need 'impact' (which generally costs).
For example, Finnan at £3m ish and Agger at about £5.5m are spot on. Dont need to be amazing or flashy, just consistent and solid.
But Gonzalez (£2.5m), Bellamy (£6m) and arguably Pennant (£7m) are examples of the failure to make that distinction.
For those positions, you need IMPACT players and they generally cost.
I'd much rather have seen the £15.5m spent on ONE Ronaldo-level player.
They got him for £12m, Chelsea got Robben for £12m...so it CAN be done.I hate Polanski
