    Either/Or

Ok. We've signed our core group of players for the next five years, which hopefully means that we are about to enter a sustained period of stability in our side. It does, however, beg the question as to WHY we've just re-upped with Gerrard/Carra/Alonso/Reina (with Momo and Finnan asap, according to what I've read on here), since the best this gang have done is 3rd place. The decision of these players to sign 5-year deals at Liverpool sets up an interesting Either/Or situation for me--

    Either

*This group of players is the least ambitious group I've ever seen, content to play for a high-paying side that simply will not do the extra things required (aka buying some quality wide and up top) to win the league

    OR

*They know something we don't know about what is in the works for the club and have decided to pledge their futures to a side that will quickly improve and start competing for titles by making some important signings.

I have to say, in my mind, it has to be the latter. It also should be said that these re-signings show a level of stability, commitment and fair play on behalf of the club that HAS TO BE attractive to in coming transfer targets; They shout "Give us your best and you will be rewarded"-- they show a club not in crisis, but absolutely committed to keeping their best players.

The ONLY thing that concerns me is Momo. Looking at what is going on over at West Ham with Tevez and his potential sale (which seems to be more of a loan agreement with a 3rd party owner) and having no idea what Mascherano's situation is, it makes me worry that mascherano may not be able to stick around. This "deal" is no deal at all; Get the player for 18 months and establish his value in the top flight of football then pay over the moon to buy him outright. I think with Momo re-signing, the handwriting must be on the wall there... or am I wrong?

It could make sense with Momo signing. I really hope we don't lose masherano - Would have him over Momo any day of the week

Hopefully we'll be challenging for enough comps to keep everyone busy/happy.

i think the players that signed realised that with some investment we are going to be pushing for honours!

          Has Momo re-signed?!

I think nothing will be said for definite on that front until the Masher situation is resolved

By the way, what is the current situation, we've got him for another year and then he's available to all? Ie do we not have 1st option or anything??

Wow i really think you're looking a bit too much into it. There's no immediate reason to leave we're on the up, new owners, new stadium, we've been successful on the pitch, CL every season, 2 CL finals, fa cup final, league cup final, obviously there's a good chance of some 'star' players coming in, but i don't think that is a requirement for these players to sign on with new contracts, it wasn't when they last signed and we are arguably a better team than when each of those players signed up.

I'd guess their decision was a little more complicated than that suggests, but I definitely think it shows they have confidence in the direction of the club.

Really? I don't think so, actually. I think competing for the Premiership title is first and foremost in the minds of many of these players (especially Finnan/Gerrard/Carragher) and I think everyone recognizes it, which is why they have all mentioned summer signings in their press releases when signing contracts. My guess, and again it is a guess, is that the players firmly believe that we will be adding new players that will be a legitimate threat to help us secure a League title. I have held off on this post, but now that we've signed Xabi Alonso in particular, a player who looked unhappy here last year and who has the childhood ambition to play for Barca-- this was his chance to opt out. And he didn't. To me, that signals something is brewing.

I obviously could be wrong, though.
