Yeah, me too. I had high hopes for Diouf as well after his performance in the World Cup.

And I could have sworn that we were on our way ten years ago when we signed Ince to provide some very much needed bite to the midfield.

Perhaps it's not so much a matter of that one big signing as it is one of gradual building upon a solid foundation. Look at United--was Carrick their missing link this year? Or did it have more to to with the continued development of the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo and Vidic in an already solid team? It also helps that they don't have to make 6-7 signings every offseason, so they can afford to pay top dollar for the couple of players that they do add.

Of course, we're sorely lacking an attacking threat from midfield other than Gerrard, as well as a consistent goalscorer. I doubt we'll win the league next year but, if we can get those pieces in place this offseason, we'll have a great foundation to build on and can start looking for the odd 25-30m signing rather than five or six 7m signings.

It's an odd time of year. Since when was Malouda a player that any of us gave a **** about? Now, he's a potential 'missing link'. My guess is he'll be the just above average player he is now.
