He couldn't sell him as he had noone else. Probably the same reason he didn't sell Finnan to Spurs. The contract extension was because he realised he had been wrong.

Total bollocks. Sami was given a contract extension to perform the sort of role that Rafa originally envisioned Pellegrino playing, i.e. to be a positive role model for Agger, Hobbs, Palleta, Roque and Antwi. Rafa knows that by training and playing with Sami the younger less experienced element of the team will learn more about positioning and compossure on the ball. Pelle would have been great for this if he hadn't turned out to be a total sack of spanners on the pitch, despite his absolute profesionalism and attitude off it
