    JFT 96 Government E-petition response

    Hi guys and gals,

feel free to delete this if its already been posted and I've missed it. Just got a reply to the petition on the Downing St site with a link in my inbox, here's what it says:

    12 June 2007

    We received a petition asking:

"We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to authorise a new public inquiry into the Hillsborough disaster."

    Details of petition:

"On Saturday 15th April 1989, 96 Liverpool fans were tragically killed on the Leppings Lane terrace at Hillsborough stadium. The verdict from the inquest that followed declared that no one was accountable for the disaster. Thousands of campaigners the world over, as well as the victims families will not rest until the real culprits are revealed in a fresh public inquiry into the disaster and taken to task."

Read the Government's responseThe Government sympathises with the families and friends of those who died at Hillsborough and the grief that they have suffered. In 1997/98 then Home Secretary, Jack Straw, asked Lord Justice Stuart-Smith to consider whether there was any new evidence then available which would justify a fresh inquiry into the 1989 disaster.

Lord Justice Stuart-Smith considered, in great detail, all the evidence which was put to him. This included all the relevant evidence presented to the earlier inquiries and inquests. He looked equally rigorously at all the information presented to him by individuals and official bodies, including those representing the families of those who died, and others who had acted in support of them. However, he concluded that there was no basis for re-considering previous criminal, disciplinary, public inquiry or inquest decisions.

Accordingly, the Government's position remains as set out in the statement made in Parliament by Jack Straw on 18 February 1998"

Another e-petition they've taken no action on.

Forget talk of transfers and unrest this is the single most dissapointing thing related to the club that has been published in the recent past.

That was always going to be the response. The biased Stuart-Smith review closed the door on any future inquiry, and tied the hands of any future Home Secretary. I know it was a major disappointment to many in government at the time. The only hope of re-opening the legal case is through the appeal to the European court of Human Rights that (I think) is currently under consideration.

It's one of the reasons I wonder exactly what we mean by campaigning for Justice for the 96 these days. I don't think we will ever achieve what the majority of us would call Justice, so unless we are prepared to conduct a never ending campaign that we know will ultimately prove a disappointment, I personally think that we need to set out some clear achievable objectives to focus on. A full, frank apology from South Yorkshire police, and the S** by the twentieth anniversary would be a start for a realistic campaign. I'm sure there are others too. But we need to start to accept that unless one of us makes it to No.10, we won't ever get the full open inquiry that we need.

My petition I set up asking for an apology from UEFA in regards to what Galliard said was also rejected. The reason why?

"Potentially libellous, false, or defamatory statements"

                Heres what i initially put:

We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to: 'demand an
official apology from UEFA in light of the recently initiated
                Liverpool Football Club smear campaign.'

Whilst we are all aware that not 100% of any fan base in this
country are complete saints, I feel it is in the best interests
of English football as a whole that UEFA, and in particular
William Galliard apologise for their slanderous allegations
made in the past week. I fear that if this kind of
unprofessional propaganda is allowed to continue it will
eventually affect all English clubs participating in European
competition. It is worrying that not just Liverpool, but
Manchester United and also Tottenham Hotspur have been victims
of what seems to be a prevalent and alleged Anglophobic agenda
that UEFA and certain national police forces are currently
                adhereing to.

I cannot see how the worlds second biggest footballing
organisation cannot instigate some standard guidelines on how
to organise away fans, regardless of nationality, during the
earlier rounds without the use of potential heavy handedness
                and intimidation.

I ask the government, particularly the sports minister Richard
Caborn to pressure UEFA to review their policies on stadium
selection and ticket allocation for future showpiece finals and
to remove from their agenda their seemingly anti-English
                viewpoint.
                Com ce, com ca.
