    Define World Class

What do you think is world class and who in our team do you think is world class and why?

I think that a world class player is in the top 3-4 players who play in that particular position
    IMO in our team:
Carra - Need I say more
Masch - One of the best defensive midfielders in the world
    Gerrard - Look at Carra

    Potentially World Class:
    Reina
    Agger
    Alonso

Javier Mascherano: 'I want to be settled and kill myself on the pitch so the team wins lots of games'

The term "World class" should be applicable for the top 2 players in their (for a squad of 22 players) position in the world.

Any team that had 6 world class players in their team would be unbeatable, this is not a catagory we fall into.

Also a mate of mine was saying that Ramos had done as good job at Sevilla as Rafa had done at Valencia. He said that Sevilla had less money and were not a big money. What do you guys think? I told him to **** off

Wrong. He's been recognised as so for more than a year.

TBH based on recent performances, I'd say he was the only World class LFC player (apart from the crow of course).

I don't think we will ever agree on a definition of "world class" and even if we did, we would never agree which players fit that definition because it is entirely subjective.

However, I think all international players can be split into three categories: legendary, world class and international class.

Below I have shown examples of three team of past players who I believe fall into each category. I hope these teams can be used to measure the standard of current players. If you want to know the international standard of a particular player, put him in each of these teams and ask yourself if he deserves to be there.

              Legendary

Players with ability and achievements that transcend their era or generation. Pioneers that can be considered to be the best of all time in their position. Example team:

              Yashin
              Carlos Alberto
              Baresi
              Beckenbauer
              Maldini
              De Stefano
              Maradona
              Cruyff
              Garrincha
              Zidane
              Pele

              World class

The best players of their generation. Outstanding players who performed to the highest standard on the world stage, leading their international and/or domestic teams to success in major tournaments. Example team:

              Schmeichel
              Cafu
              Ayala
              Desailly
              Brehme
              Stoichkov
              Gullit
              Matthaus
              Hagi
              Batistuta
              Larsson

              International class

Players who have served their country throughout their career and contributed greatly in terms of appearances and/or performances and/or goals. Example team:

              Zubizaretta
              Nilsson
              Couto
              Berg
              Petrescu
              Kanchelskis
              Almeyda
              Prosinecki
              Finidi George
              Bierhoff
              Pauleta

Gerrard is best footballer in the world imo.

He does everything.Leads his team, tackles, can run all day with the strength of an ox,accurate passes, scores important and great goals, local lad who supported his team and came through the ranks and is the captain of his team, has won many major trophies and is still to hit his peak, never in the papers for the wrong reasons, excellent role model for kids.

Real Roy of the Rovers stuff.

Who can you replace him with?

Can anyone come up with someone cause i can't.

                  Pauleta

I think you have picked some very good teams there. However I am very suprised you didn't find room for the "real" Ronaldo. For me he is quite simply the best striker of his generation and if it wasn't for the serious knee injury he picked up whilst playing for Inter, he could quite easily have been the best ever imo. The man has smashed it for every team he has played for

These were just meant to be examples mate.

I think it is difficult to classify a player before his career has finished. I know I've included Pauleta but he is such a good example of an international class player, I had to put him in there. For me, Ronaldo is world class but there is still time to qualify as a legend.

El Jefe will be almost as important as Voronin next year.

He makes the game look so easy. Next year we will see more of his passing ability, which if you've watched much south american football you will appreciate is at least as good as Xabi's

                              World class:
                              1. Ranking among the foremost in the world; of an international standard of excellence; of the highest order.
                              2. Great, as in importance, concern, or notoriety.

Now this is a world class line-up:
Felix, Carlos Alberto, Everaldo, Brito, Piazza, Clodoaldo, Jairzinho, Gerson, Tostao, Pele, Rivelino

Some neat football played there! (1970 world cup) Attacking as feck, more like 4-2-4, NOT a tactic I would want Rafa to use btw
