    Forget us signing any superstars!

George Gillett says Liverpool are about to enter "phase two" of their summer strengthening.

The Anfield giants have already made sure the backbone of their side will remain intact for years to come by signing several players to new long-term deals.

Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Pepe Reina and Xabi Alonso have all put pen to paper on contract extensions.

But most Anfield fans were expecting Gillett and co-owner Tom Hicks to splash the cash on expensive new signings as well, with names like Samuel Eto'o and Fernando Torres mentioned as potential targets.

Gillett admits that he feels pressure to bring in new players, and says the club are trying to get deals done.

He told the club's official website: "I sense that kind of pressure building from the media. I think the fans know that we have huge regard for Rafa. He has a number of initiatives and concepts and plans under way.

"We're not going to do something just to try to prove something. I can assure you that we are working on different things.

"The first part was identifying a number of our existing star players whom Rafa wanted to sign on long-term contracts.

"That was the first step and it has been done. Now we're moving on to phase two, which is bringing players in.

"For Tom and me, this really is about trying to win championships, and that takes commitment, no matter what sport.

"We are pleased with Rafa and his strategy. It's not dissimilar to what he outlined to us in February. His belief is to look for players with the proper chemistry to enhance the team, players not too disimilar to Kewell and Gonzalez.
"We support Rafa. He has a programme under way and, as that unfolds, that will be the time for us to be judged, not now."

'Of course I didn't take my wife to see Rochdale as an anniversary present.
      It was her birthday.
Would I have got married during the football season ?
      Anyway, it was Rochdale reserves.'

Gonzalez is/was widely considered the best player in Chile and had lit up La Liga with some mazey runs and stunning goals, I didn't see anyone complaining here when we signed him. Kewell was a steal @ £5m when we signed him and if it wasn't for an unfortunate run of injuries wouldn't have been a dead cert in a 4 man midfield or on the left of a front 3. The guy was a class act and we beat Arse to his signature. They were hardly considered poor purchases at the time, and kewell was considered world class. Someone even ended up launching kewelltalk.com chat site such was his expected impact.

Consider also that Gillett may have been talking about their position rather than their quality?

I also remember reading that Times article and couldn't remember seeing anything about Kewell or Gonzalez.

Whats all this phase 2 bollox.

That implies we couldn't start buying players until we'd re-signed our best best on long contracts.

whats up with us, can't we sign new players at the same time as we are re-signing our current ones on long term contracts. Or is this just more American bull **** to justify the chronic lack of t/fer action.

                  I know which I think.

Maybe, but surely everyone of Rafa's major targets doesn't play in spain.

No worries, been a long day, and it completely went past me when i read it. All this rafa's leaving bollocks is doing my head in. Some folks are being soooo hostile as well. It's about time someone invented an invitation only forum, may be which others could read but not post on. May be that creates a them and us culture, but at least we wouldn't get the abusive nonsense we've seen recently. It's been like KT all over again. I'm hoping that the abusive posting will die down once we've signed a handful of people.

Maybe, maybe not, it could be a case of all his number one targets are in Spain. I dunno, straws and clutching spring to mind
