sums up the feeling on here !!

The internet is a wonderful creation: how else would you have ever ended up reading my wise words? But, nevertheless, there are times when I wish no one had ever thought of it. And this is one of those them.

For there is nothing more depressing these days than chancing upon a Liverpool forum. Should you have the misfortune to do so you would find post after post complaining about the lack of transfer activity and how this has already killed off Liverpool’s hopes for next season.

Given this situation, you would have thought that the news of a bid for West Ham’s Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun would have brought some relief. Instead it has done the opposite. For, the masses seem to have decided, Benayoun is not good enough. Or, rather, he doesn’t cost enough because that is apparently the way you judge players these days.

It all stems from Rafael Benitez’s comments in the aftermath of the Champions League final defeat, where he urged the club to act fast in order to secure the players that he had in mind rather then end up with the second or third choices later on during the summer. That he had already identified two players costing in the region of £10 million sparked frenetic speculation as to who these two must be. No one costing less will do.

Which is why the Benayoun transfer rumours have been met with skepticism at best. It is symptomatic of a generation of fans who value players by hype, rating in football management games and youtube clips.

None of those needs to be checked to establish that Benayoun is an excellent player: that is something for which you have to see him play. Surprisingly few seem to remember last year’s the FA Cup final when Benayoun literally ran rings round the Livepool defence.

His flair and technique would come in pretty useful in a Liverpool squad that last season lacked a creative outlet once Luis Garcia was ruled out injured. He might not fall in the £10 million bracket that Benitez mentioned last May – probably because his contract is running out - but he remains a player who the Spanish manager values very highly since his time in Spain. And that should be all that really matters

You could be right. Who knows.

I'm just utterly bored by the whole summer / transfer / stadium thing.

Conversely, I'm addicted to coming on here just in case there is some news, which, invariably, there isn't.

    How sad.
    Oh I don't know.

Well sad lad and sentiments I echo.

Players dont have to cost the earth to be decent or quality. Owen for 9mil v bent for 17mil..no contest but then again there are those who think that the more you pay the better you get. Really?

Daniel Agger for 5mil to Liverpool
Walter Samuel for over 15mil to Real Madrid.

I want at Liverpool who Rafa wants.

        Thanks Red G.

You have put into words what i have been thinking about the utter nonsense being talked on internet forums since the last ball was kicked last season. I still check in and have a lurk, so its my own fault, but it is seriously depressing. It is symptamatic of the majority of modern football fans that players are rated almost purely on hype and the amount they cost.

With this mentality its a sad fact that some people would only be happy if we sign Eto or villa for 35 million plus. Something that anyone with a brain cell would not risk any significant amount of money on, because it wont happen.

Thank you again Red G, Nicey and a few others for providing a desert island of sanity in an ocean of utter mind blowing bollocks.......

Mate great sensible post, Internet fans are mostly clueless morons half of them must be spotty 12 year olds with 3 years of CM under there belts. Every year its the same actally it gets worse, you see it with the valuations they put on players. Its easy just add up the Millions we will get from players we dont want and add ehh lets say 30,000,000 Sterling then find out there price in CM, click buy and hey presto Mancini and his mates are staying at the local liverpool Holiday Inn.

I am typing this on a laptop so I will keep it short (hate lapop keyboards to small for my chubby digits) but I was thinking recently back to last silly season. I have to say at the end of it I was thoroughly satisfied with our business dealings, KUYT and Bellers looked like an ace partnership, Agger a great replacement for Sami, Gonzo and Pennant the answer to our Winger prayers etc It did not quite pan out for some of our signing but others were definite strong additions to our squad.

Last season we performed well in the transfer market, this season is a different ball game wth different requirments, different goals and different resources. I have complete faith in our, owners, management and boss to get the players we require.

Its muppet season !! I have my rifle permit up to date

Hang in there fellas feeding time at the Zoo is nearly over, they head back into there caves soon

I agree entirely with your sentiments, unfortunately, I'm not strong enough to ignore the forums and find myself worrying "will Rafa resign today" etc etc.

Just a slightly different view on the " morons" and "zoo" comments from some posters. I think it's becoming more evident that for many people these forums are the main way the interact with their football club and their knowledge of football is restricted to internet gossip, CM and Sky Sports. This is often through a lack of opportunity ( financial, geographical, time) to experience their club and assess players in any other way. Some people prefer to make their judgements based on these factors. Fair enough, but I still pine for the times when you learnt about football from watching it, listening to your dad and his mates talk about the match and then slowly graduating to forming your own judgements.

The trick is not to believe a ****ing word of anything from anyone until you see a player next to Rafa wearing or holding up his shirt, especially from some of the 'insiders' - 99% of the rest is bull****e.

I suppose some posters is my new knickname. I'm afraid the above does not hold much weight with me in my humble opinion. I live in Hong Kong, have never had the chance to go to Anfield to support my beloved Liverpool FC, but I watch ever game they play on the box as we get them all live over here, everyday I log onto the internet to read up on whats going on, no mater were I am . I consider myself reasonable knowledable on Liverpool FC and I am from literaly the otherside of the planet. In my opinion these people are just idiots, Stevie G is a ****, Carra is not good enough, Where is the investment .. Bollox the lot of it, Carra can never play center back, where are the transfers ?? I agree, its hard these days to see your team - i barely ever get to watch them in the flesh, but i dont offer scouting opinions on players from around the world based on youtube videos - nor do i think that you have to spend 30 million on a single player to win the premier league.

The people that post about these issues continually (the numbers online seem to double on here when the topics are at there most uninteresting) - in my opinion - show themsleves to be naive, blinkered, immature children and it frustrates me having to pick through reams and reams of absolute ill informed, un-educated, bull**** written by idiots waiting for the results to process on championship manager.

Everything is based on hype and money these days and its so frustrating that people fall for it and dont have the common sense and patience to ignore it.

I want to be overseas like Nicey, (only without a laptop) until the window, preferably triple glazed, is firmly bolted shut.

Didn't realise I was jumping on the new nickname bandwagon. I wasn't implying that if you hadn't been to Anfield etc that your opinion is less valid or you're less knowledgeable. I just think that some people have been brought up in a very different era to me and make quick judgements and expect instant gratification from life, so they will carry this through to their opinions on football. Probably some of the fans who started supporting us after Istanbul with be excpecting a CL final everyother year and will be whinging if they don't get. Just take it as a sign of me getting old and mellowing in my old age towards the impetuous youth of today.

I have to say that it irritates me when people assume you can only know things by watching games live. There are advantages to both live watching and videos (why else would top coaches make videos of matches if there was nothing to learn from them which they hadn't seen live). Also there is a much wider opportunity to gain knowledge of football by playing, watching other teams etc.

However I find that it is rarely helpful to cast names about and the best thing to do is attempt to conduct a decent discussion with people about points. You can fairly easily stay away from a lot of the more ludicrous speculation by choosing which forums/threads to read.

Well I'm glad I never said that you can only know things by watching live as that would be a really stupid thing to say.

I was trying to make the point that learning about football for me was a more gradual process and it took the form of listening and learning from others and then trying to form a balanced judgement of my own.

but there are only so many times you can read a thread and think 'do i tell this person that being realistic - we arent going to sign eto or henry' Its not even worth discussing in the first place - never mind for the 300th time.
