The Fire fighter reference refers to a call made by South Yorkshire Police to the Fire Brigade, requesting assistance, cutting gear etc.
The operator taking the call at the Fire Brigade control centre, insisted that she be given the post code of the ground before actioning a call out, the Police didnt know the post code and just kept saying "Hillsborough, the Football ground Sheffield Wednesday etc", Some say this caused unnecessary delay and could have resulted in lives being lost that could otherwise have been savedLawrenson:"Well thats 3 good chances they have had in the first 3 minutes of this half"
Motson:"" Yes Mark, you could almost say that they have had 3 chances in as many minutes"

My (then) wife was actually a controller at Merseyside Fire Brigade, they had a similar system in place as in Sheffield (remember, this was well before Sat nav)
She was disgusted at the operators attitude, if she had been told of a major incident at either football ground in Liverpool she would have dispatched the pumps and worried about the paperwork later
