    More Rafa vs Board rumours

    RAFARGH!
    By Simon Mullock 24/06/2007

LIVERPOOL'S American owners will call Rafa Benitez's bluff if the Kop boss attempts to use Real Madrid's impending search for a new coach as a threat to extract more transfer cash.

Benitez must fear the money being made available by George Gillett and Tom Hicks to reinforce his team is only a fraction of the £60million he indicated he would need to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title.

With Real ready to launch a search for a coach to replace Fabio Capello - set for showdown talks with the Spanish champions tomorrow - there is concern inside Anfield that Benitez will feature prominently on the Bernabeu wish-list.

The Spaniard has twice before used interest from the club with which he launched his coaching career as political capital to get his own way at Liverpool.

But Yank duo Gillett and Hicks will not be railroaded into altering their financial plans for the club - regardless of Benitez's frustrations.

When questioned last night about Liverpool's inactivity in the transfer market, Hicks said: "I will not comment publicly on transfer business."

But after being priced out of moves to secure top strikers like Samuel Eto'o, Carlos Tevez or Fernando Torres, the two Liverpool owners are aware of Benitez's growing frustrations.

The 47-year-old refused to work under similar circumstances at Valencia, quitting the club three years ago after winning two La Liga titles and the UEFA Cup - safe in the knowledge that Liverpool wanted him to succeed Gerard Houllier.

Madrid's likely decision to part company with Capello, just a week after he reclaimed the Spanish title, will once again call into question the coach's future at Anfield.

Last summer, Benitez used interest from Real and Inter Milan to secure transfer funds from the club - and an improved contract. And within weeks of Gillett and Hicks completing their £450m buy-out of the Merseysiders he again indicated that a return to the Bernabeu was being mooted at the highest level of his former club.

The two Amercans, however, have not taken kindly to being publicly lambasted by an employee over their lack of knowledge about football's transfer market.

Benitez was being touted as a genuine successor to Capello earlier this year, with Chelsea's Jose Mourinho and Getafe's Bernd Schuster seemingly his only rivals for the biggest job in club football.

But that was when Madrid trailed Barcelona and Sevilla in La Liga, before a late-season surge claimed the championship on the last day of the season.

Capello's days at the Bernabeu still look numbered, with a decision expected in the next 48 hours.

Schuster is now the clear favourite to step in, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, PSV Eindhoven's Ronald Koeman and former Bernabeu favourite Michael Laudrup also in the frame.

    In Rafa I Trust

I think Rafa will always be linked with a move to Real, simply due to his history and connection there. To be honest, I dont think he and Rel aowuld be a good mix. Rafa, like Cappello, is a very pragmatic and cagey tactician. both are not ones to let their teams really let rip. This type of play is not the Madrid fans/boards cup of tea. Even though Capello won the league, it was considered to be won in an ugly way and he wont last much longer. I think Rafa would comeup against the same problems.

I'd have thought Wenger would be ideal for Real.

wouldn't the whole "sh*t hanging off a piece of sh*t" comment coming from the guy that would be the link between rafa and the real board have been enough to quell this bollox?

i mean, of course madrid would want a winning manager like rafa, and that comment came from bitterness that he has snubbed them twice, but it was hardly respectful of rafa was it?

You're right it really is unbelievable crap given that Rafa was quoted on the offal only yesterday saying that everything's sweet.

                GERRARD'S RAFA RIFT
WORLD EXCLUSIVE Skipper's future in the balance
                By Simon Mullock
STEVEN GERRARD'S future at Liverpool is hanging in the balance, with the Anfield captain growing increasingly unhappy with life under Rafa Benitez.

Sunday Mirror Sport can reveal the strained relationship between Gerrard and Benitez is now close to breaking point.

Gerrard publicly insists that he is happy to play anywhere in Benitez's tactical system.

But privately, he feels his poor form this season is down to the Spaniard's insistence that he plays wide on the right of midfield, while Xabi Alonso and Momo Sissoko play in his favourite central position. Gerrard is prepared to put his preference to one side for England - but feels his talent is going to waste at Anfield.

Benitez, who has insisted he will not quit Liverpool, now faces a third fight to keep the £30m-rated midfielder at his home-town club. Gerrard looked destined for Chelsea after Euro 2004, but was persuaded by Benitez when the Spaniard arrived at Anfield from Valencia.

Twelve months later he asked for a transfer after becoming frustrated by the lack of progress regarding new contract talks - but changed he mind again.

But at the age of 26, he feels he may have to move on to realise his potential.

It's well known that Simon Mullock is a Manc, and that he writes absolute bollocks. He's also on about the Mancs going for Torres today, obviously trying to drive up the price.

That comment indicates the The Mirror has went fishing for quotes regarding transfers and were told to sling their hook so they decided to makes some stories up instead.
