    Barca vs Liverpool

Some people in here are questioning Rafa's ability to bring us No.19; I was just thinking last night - what the f8ck would be the reaction of LFC fans & the Board if we had a forward line of Messi, Ronaldinho & Eto and won f8ck all (as happened Barca this season?)

Would we be all behind him? Would the Board further sanction the purchase of Thierry Henry (your Managers number one target & one of the most coveted players in the world??)

Not an f-king chance; you'd have half of the forum screaming for Martin O' Neill to come in.

Judge Rafa after he has had the wallet opened to him in the way that Capello, Ferguson, Anchelotti, Mourinho, Rykaard etc etc have. Give him a Summer of getting his number one targets and see where he is 2 seasons later - at that stage you are comparing like with like and only then.

That's an extremely weak comparison, considering what Barca have won with that squad over the past couple of seasons.

The point is that Rafa has been in charge for three years now. And in each of those three seasons we haven't produced anything even faintly resembling a title challenge.

You can bang on about the cups all you want, but 5th, 3rd and 3rd is distinctly average for LFC.

Oh...and he HAS had money to spend.

I noted elsewhere in here that his net spend to date has been circa £40m. Hardly a kings ransom for a club with a Champions League win and final in 3 seasons.

Why did we end up with Pennant last Summer & not Alves if Rafa had free access to funds?

Why was Bellamy bought for a buy-out clause £6m rather than the top strikers in Europe that Rafa wanted to go for?

Why did he have to keep & use Cisse rather than sell him on at a loss and get one of his own selected players in?

Did Rafa ever have the chance to purchase a Kaka? a Rooney? a Ronaldinho? a Drogba? etc etc

The comparison is valid - if you don't agree then fine but don't say its not true when it clearly is.

He has had money, but has been forced to buy 2 or 3 average player srather than the 1 world class player.

If we'd have bought one ****-off giant signing every year then we wouldn't have "smaller fee" players like Sissoko, Reina, Garcia, Crouch. Pennant, although not a great player, has come in handy some of these key games in the 2nd half of the season. Bellamy's just a knobber. So I don't buy that "Rafa's had his huge cash". United and Chelsea haven't had to add to their squad as well as spunk out huge amounts on big players. They've been able to do the latter. We haven't.

              Exactly. Hopefully we can now.

Last summer Alves would have cost 13/14m.

Alves = Bellamy, Pennant + Gonzalez.

Which side of that equation do you prefer ?

It's Rafa's CHOICE to cram our team with squad players.

How well do you think we would've done without Bellamy (ie without a striker with any genuine pace) or any LW cover? He crams the squad with squad players because we ****ing needed squad players as backup. Now that he has built the quality of the squad up overall, we can now afford to replace the likes of Gonzalez with better players now more money is available.

How very intelligent. Lets sell all our squad players and buy only 20mil first team players and play them in all 50+ matches every season. When they get injured we will bring reserve team players because we dont have another decent player for that position anymore.

The thing is I actually think before last season I prefer the balance bought to the squad potentially by the left hand side. It is very easy to make that sort of equation but I think both sides were pretty equal gambles considering the squad we had.

Our biggest problems were no width and lack of pace. This is planely better sorted out on the right if each player had settled and reached their potential and played at it all season. Both sides would have added little in terms of goals from midfield.

It's Rafas choice to gamble on a well set up balanced side rather than have one or two superstars and hope they work out I agree. That is not the same choice that you are trying to paint it as.

Great post. Agree with you, and would love to see him been giving the backing that managers you mention get.

Then we'll soon see if he has that world class pedigree or not.
Granted, if it doesn't happen, I'm not a devout RAFAist, and would be happy to get someone else in if it doesn't happen.

But I'd imagine he'd do wonders.

We have now, number-wise, a very good squad. The only thing missing are those big names on the team-sheet that take us to that title-challenging thing we all want so much. If we'd have spent £14m on Alves last season, we'd be buying squad players this season. So I don't mind the equation so much.

Also, we're not an Alves away from winning the league - we still need that goalscorer too.
