I disagree.

Every year, we close our road off to traffic and have a street party.

Most people can't be bothered with 'community'. If you try, its surprising how well it can work.

Isn't that a contradiction?

Nothing would please me more than to see community spirit re-emerging in our neighbourhoods but in this day and age it's asking too much of people who basically couldn't give a damn.

yes, yes, and a little bit of no

blocks of flats, new towns etc.. no community shop, no church hall (don't worry, not a religious rant) and no pub, essentially no community meeting place, look at (older) new towns where there are no locals and look at the new estates where everyone drives to tesco or asda, people don't walk down the street and (here's the no) drive everywhere so they don't meet their neighbours

Not really. It just takes some effort.

There's too many other things to do nowadays though, I accept, such as playstations, satellite TV, chatting on internet forums etc.

Get rid of the supermarkets and go back to local shops (with no parking). Nothing would inject community spirit more than people having to walk to the butchers, greengrocers, newsagents, off-licence, florists, bakers and queue up with everyone else.
