Rafa must play Stevie in the centre.

While I’m excited about the arrival of Torres and the fact we've just spent 25 million quid I really hope we go out now and sign a predominantly right side winger, the reason is simple I want Stevie playing in the centre for every single game this season he is wasted out on the right, sure he can do a great job out there but he is far more effective in the centre. 2 of Momo, Marsh and Alonso cannot be allowed to play together in a 4-4-2 formation in the middle of the park because they quite simply will not score goals and imo you need at least on central midfielder who can put the ball away. Imo to win the league next season we need to 1- sign that elusive wing man 2- play Stevie in the centre 3- Dramatically improve our dead ball delivery (which quite frankly is shocking).

As I said really excited about Torres but we need a tad more imho.

I will be disappointed if we're still regularly playing SG on the right next season. He's just better in the middle, simple as that.

The thing is though - I would still play SG on the right as he's still the best option we have out there.
Also - I don't expect to see SG in the hole anymore - he's clearly not comfortable with it. Plus it will mean Kuyt/Torres wont play if SG is in the hole.

Well I think we gotta look at the oppo, whether we're home.away.
Thing is, we do have a huge array of options in the middle, so we wont have to flog SG for a whole season, got enough talent in their to give him a few games out, But do agree, we cant play him on the wing anymore.

Whoever the hell he likes. Gerrard's our best CM, our best player full stop. As far as you can you play your best players in their best positions. If that causes problems elsewhere then that's what the transfer market is for. There should be no excuse for regularly playing him out of position next season. I don't doubt he can thrive at RM, he has in the past, but he's that much better in the centre.

Without a doubt, thats why we need to spend big in that position so we can play our best central midfielder in the centre of midfield.

You are all going to be disappointed next season so I think.
I think it will be more of the same from Rafa next season when it comes to Stevie. We have Momo, Alonso, Mascherano who pretty much play in the two central midfield positions, also we have Levia who will probably play there too.
I expect Gerrard to allowed roam a bit depending on who we play. I think his main role in the team next season will be in an advanced midfield position. Not defensive, which Rafa likes his two holding midfielders to be.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

                * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

Been a while since i've seen a Stevie G thread :ahem:

To be honest i've given up speculating on it now, i'm almost certain it'll be more of the same, which is why we have the mids have now, but lets see if we sign an RW first. What we might see is Rafa trying to play Stevie in the hole like we saw a bit towards the end of the season, but we seem to have too many players for that to happen, so again i'm just confused

Dead on, Rashid made a brave post the other day about our style of play which can be awful but i think we it's so much better with Stevie in the middle. I didn't jump for joy when the anouncement about Momos new contract was made, not that i don't rate him i think he's class but Alonso and Marsh do the same thing only better.

I think so too. LM is more of a pressing concern, so I'm not sure how much we'll have left for a RM player. Pennant is good but not good enough for first choice. That means Stevie out wide a lot of the time again.

If that is the way of it then it's a shame, a mistake even, but not a defining one IMO. When all is said and done he is still pretty good out wide provided we get the right person in on the left to make sure we're not too narrow.

Stevie needs to be free, where he starts is irrelevant, behind a single striker he is to confined, as long as he can roam and use his energy he will be player of the year.

Stevie G for free role in front of Masher/Xabi

                        5 goals (target 15)

                        3 assists also........

Stevie has consistently shown that he can't play in CM the way that Rafa wants. When he does play the Rafa way it's such a disciplined role that we don't get the best of him.

Remember his best season was when he played in the free role starting on the wing. As long as he can provide a good balance between providing width and moving inside I'll be happy.

I have to admit though Stevie in the middle has been about the best CM pairing I've seen.
