Gerrard: Torres is major statement of intent

Steven Gerrard believes the Reds have issued a major statement of intent to their Premiership rivals with the signing of Fernando Torres.

The Liverpool skipper is more excited by the club's current transfer activity than at any time since he broke into the first team in 1998.

He said: "Torres has all the attributes to become firmly established as world class. Some of the other players we're being linked with excite me too. It's great to see us looking at young, hungry players with their best years ahead of them.

"Since I've been in the first team I can't remember us making such a major statement of intent in the transfer market as this.

"In recent years it's only really been Manchester United and Chelsea buying players around the £20m mark, so it's great to see us able to compete for players of that kind of value.

"The Liverpool board has always backed the manager and we've invested heavily over the years. Roy Evans and Gerard Houllier spent a lot of money, but we've all been looking for that extra step to close the gap and attract the kind of players United and Chelsea are able to afford.

"This is the first summer in a long time we've been able to do that. I'll bet players and fans from other clubs have been looking at us and thinking: '**** me, Liverpool are making a move for some of the big boys now.'

"That's what's so exciting. When the American owners took over they talked about three stages. The first was proceeding with the new stadium, which they're doing. Then they wanted to secure the key players on long-term contracts, which they've done.

"Stage three is all about spending money on the players to make us compete for the Premiership, which has now started.

"We're looking in great shape, not only going into this season, but for the next few years."

Gerrard is in no doubt the club's record signing has all the attributes necessary to set English football alight.

"I've never played against him, but I've watched him a lot," he said. "I really like him and I'm sure he will prove a great signing for us.

"Not only is he a great player now, but potentially he has all the attributes to become firmly established as world class. He's at the right club and will be working with the right people to make that happen.

"He's a fast, strong centre-forward who likes the ball being played into his feet. They are the kind of strikers I love playing with. I've no doubt we're going to get our money's worth out of him, with him being such a young player."

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old midfielder has spoken of his disappointment at the way he and his teammates started last season – and his determination not to make the same mistakes again.

"I've heard it said before that you can't win the league in the first 10 games, but you can lose it," said Gerrard. "That's definitely been true in our case. In the last two years we've lost any chance of challenging in the first 10 games.

"You can't give teams like United and Chelsea the kind of head starts we have. This year it's essential we get off to a flyer, or at the very least stay with them far longer than we've done in the past.

"We've shown we tend to get stronger as the season progresses, but it's no use trying to come from a long way behind."

One factor the skipper hopes to exploit is a full summer's break.

"All the top teams can talk about the knock-on effect of a World Cup, but in our case it may have been more of a factor last season because United and Chelsea had more strength in depth.

"I think we could be getting to a point where our squad is comparable in all departments now. I see four or five players competing for two positions in key areas of the team, and that shows how strong we are.

"I'm not going to start making any unnecessary predictions about what's going to happen this season, and the last thing any of us need to do is build hopes up too much, but without doubt if we all perform to our level week in, week out, we've the players to push United and Chelsea all the way."

Amazing that our official website can't even get our captain's age right.

Gerrard hails Anfield spree while new owners stay out of the red

          James Ducker

Steven Gerrard believes that the arrival at Anfield of Fernando Torres will enable Liverpool to push Manchester United and Chelsea “all the way” in their pursuit of the Barclays Premier League title next season.

The Liverpool captain said that the record-breaking £20.2 million capture of Torres was a “major statement of intent” and he is excited at the prospect of Ryan Babel, the highly rated Ajax and Holland forward, and Yossi Benayoun, the West Ham United and Israel winger, joining the club. Babel, 20, who is comfortable playing on either wing or up front, and Benayoun could have medicals today, with a view to completing moves that are expected to be for a combined total of about £15 million.

“In recent years, it’s only really been United and Chelsea buying players around the £20 million mark, so it’s great to see us able to compete for players of that kind of value,” Gerrard said.

But The Times can reveal that George Gillett Jr and Tom Hicks, the club’s American owners, may not be quite the knights in shining armour that Gerrard, the England midfield player, has made them out to be.

Given that Liverpool have recouped £24.4 million from the sale of five players – Craig Bellamy, whose £7.5 million move to West Ham United was completed yesterday, Djibril Cissé, Mark González, Luis GarcÍa and Florent Sinama Pongolle – their net outlay is likely to be only about £11 million once Babel and Benayoun join, possibly slightly more if Rafael BenÍtez, the manager, can sign a defender.

That is some way short of last summer’s net cost of about £19 million and is dwarfed by the £32.22 million that Liverpool earned through television revenue and participation, match and performances bonuses for reaching the Champions League final last season, not to mention the £28.4 million in television and merit payments for finishing third in the Premiership.

With the Premier League’s new global £2.73 billion television contract kicking in this season, Liverpool can expect a 60 per cent increase on last season’s returns if they finish third again and stand to earn as much as £50 million if they win the title. And that does not take into account the possibility of another successful run in the Champions League.

Gillett and Hicks will argue that they have committed millions to tie Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Xabi Alon-so, José Manuel Reina and Mohamed Sissoko to lucrative long-term contracts, but they have budgeted for the projected £30 million extra that will cost over the next four to five years.

Similarly, the £215 million-plus needed to build a new stadium in Stanley Park was identified as being in place when they bought the club in February, so there has not been quite the mass injection of funds for players that was hinted at.

None of this appears to concern Gerrard, however, who is determined not to lose early ground in the title race this season, as has happened in previous campaigns. “I’ve heard it said before that you can’t win the league in the first ten games, but you can lose it,” he said. “That’s definitely been true in our case. You can’t give teams like United and Chelsea the kind of head starts we have.

“This year, it’s essential we get off to a flyer, or at the very least stay with them far longer than we’ve done in the past.”

BenÍtez believes that people should respect Carragher’s decision if he eventually decides to retire from international football after the defender reacted angrily to accusations that he was “a bottler” for considering stopping playing for England.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

To be fair, we've done pretty well to get the kind of money we have done for the players we've sold.

It's not something which we've always been very good at.

we have been pretty busy this summer.
                    • Iv lost count of the amount of youngsters that have been signed.
                    • All the contracts sorted for the key players
                    • Cisse, gonzales, bellamy sold for decent enough money.
                    • Fernando Torres signed!
                    • New stadium plans nearly done and to be unvieled this month.

I think it has been a pretty good summer, dont really blame gerrard for being happy, everything seems rosey.

The only problem we still have is signing an established winger. which doesnt look like happening..maybe it will happen in january.

And what's more, done early, giving the new players time to settle before the season, and allowing us to relax on deadline day, rather than frothing at the mouth as we did in the past.
I'm playing all the right notes. Not necessarily in the right order. I'll give you that, sunshine.

They really are a shower of ****.

I'd prefer it if they'd just be consistent and quote the net spend rather than quoting a figure like £40m, misleading people and, as you say, putting pressure on the manager.

(I wouldn't mind but I'm sure it was a "broadsheet" too)
