    Team news against Bremen

Torres may have to wait for Liverpool debut

Jul 17 2007 by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

FERNANDO TORRES may have to wait for his Liverpool debut as Rafa Benitez eases his record signing into senior action.

Torres is pencilled in for his first appearance in a red shirt against Werder Bremen tonight, but Benitez says if the striker plays, it is only likely to be as a late sub in Switzerland.

Torres has recently recovered from an ankle injury, and having started training later than most of his team-mates, Benitez sees little point in taking risks.

“Fernando won’t start this game,” explained Benitez.

“If he does play, it will only be for a little time. Maybe we will wait for the second game because there is no hurry.

“What’s most important this week is our training and preparation.”

Ryan Babel and Yossi Benayoun are also expected to feature later in the week.

Meanwhile, Benitez has handed Javier Mascherano an extra week off following the Copa America, and has revealed the Argentinian won’t join the Reds’ Far East tour.

“Mascherano will have ten days off, but when he returns he will stay at Melwood with the reserves,” said Benitez.

“There would be too much travelling for him to come with us to Hong Kong. We don’t want to kill the player before the start of the season. It was a pity for Mascherano Argentina didn’t win in the Copa America.”

Benitez will use most of his squad again, with as many as 22 players possibly featuring in the Stadium Bruehl in Grenchen.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Pretty much a similar team to Saturday's then.

Ahh well, at least I'll not have to wait 35 minutes for the official site to load and can get a proper look at the Crow.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

        That made me chuckle
        Oh I don't know.

I am a bit disappointed that Hammill is not getting the chance to show Rafa at first hand what he can do, but a loan deal at Southampton is probably best for him.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

            * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

It's certainly a policy I can see catching on.

exactly i think he is going to get more from a loan and playing regularly at that age. he may get recalled at christmas though if he is having a blinder!

Rafa's man-management and conditioning skills really are top-notch.
                    .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.
