    Does our defence need Strengthening?

    Its been brilliant over the last few seasons but i think it needs a little tweeking and refreshed.

    Carra has been the outstanding defender we've had for the past few years and closely followed by Finnan and Sami.

    Agger is coming along nicely still has alot to learn but is he first choice beside Carra?? I know Sami's best days are over and the legs are gone but still handy to have in the squad.

    So do we need another central defender, fullbacks??

    I agree, I think it needs strengthening but not too much. Say a LB (Heinze, Baines, Chillini) and a another CB.

      If Rafa want to have every option available then he will need a right wing back.

      We also need a central defender if Agger or Carra gets a long term injury. Sami isn't good enough to play week in week out anymore
      Just believe and you never know what will happen.

      According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

          Not really. Agger is excellent in the air.
          Just believe and you never know what will happen.

            I think we will be fine for a season at least. Agger and Carra are a great first choice partnership and Sami and Arbeloa at least offer decent fill in potential. If someone like Heinze came in to play LB but could cover in the middle I think we would be sorted.

            I would like to see the addition of what I would call 'a big heady man' into our defensive options but with Sami knocking about this year I think we can cope with what we have and maybe if Palletta/Hobbs kick on they can challenge for a place.

              He is good but he is not as dominant as Terry, Vidic or Hyypia is he? I think the absence of a player with that sort of ability in the air has hindered teams like Arsenal against some teams like Bolton in the past few years. I think you need a dominant aerial option.

                  Yes, at some point. Finnan can't have much longer, and we need a left back who is capable of defending.

                  Don't think Arbeloa is our centre half cover as such, though it is his natural position, and none of the youngsters are anywhere near ready.

                      Who knows but as reserve captain you have to think he is highly rated. I would be tempted to give him a short loan spell in the lower leagues this year rather than more time in the reserves though.

                        There is no way Rafa will start the season without bringing in quality cover for CB. Sami is still a legend, but as AF has mentioned and Sami admitted himself last year, there is noway he can cope playing week in week out if Carra or Dan get injured. A LB who can play CB would be ideal but if Rafa had to take a player who could play one one position, I think he'd choose CB.
                        If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

                          TBH you could say that every year about every position on the pitch but I do feel a little more backup is needed, more so than our first team selection being changed.

                            It needs a tweak. First the CB position, Agger & Carra need cover since Hyypia aint getting any younger.
                            Secondly, the RB position, same story as the CB situation above. We need cover for Finnan.
                            The solution to both is to sign M Richards from M City. He can play both positions easily although Sven praised him yesterday we can still go for him.
                            The LB position looks locked for Riise as starter with Insua & Aurelio as cover.
                            Insua looked very good in the U20 youth world cup, will not be surprised if he got more games than last season.

                              I suppose the jury is still out on Arbeloa but he does give us cover at RB CB and LB.
