    McManaman writes off Pool's chances

    Monday, 30 July 17:01 BST

Steve McManaman believes that Liverpool's £40million worth of new signings will not bring a first Premier League title since 1990.

Manager Rafael Benitez has signed Fernando Torres, Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun and Andriy Voronin over the summer, but McManaman, who made over 300 appearances for Liverpool during a nine-year spell at Anfield, feels that Chelsea will win The Premier League this season.

McManaman, who was speaking at the launch of the Setanta Sports channel, feels that the new signings will take too long to gel as a team: "For Liverpool fans the Premiership title is the holy grail.

"Fernando Torres has arrived for a lot of money and the fans will be expecting him to do well straight away," McManaman continued.

"The Liverpool fans will expect them to win the Premiership this season. But I still think it will be very difficult to dislodge Manchester United and Chelsea this season. The fact they had a 20 point gap over Liverpool last season showed it was a big gap.

"It is not as easy as splashing out a lot of money on new players and then expecting them to win the title. Manchester United and Chelsea have also spent a lot of money.

"You hope that Liverpool can win it in the future but at the moment United and Chelsea seem to have a hold on it."

Guess he is right really, but I feel we are going to be a damn sight closer this season...Like I said in a previous thread...If are in the mix come December then we have an even chance of winning number 19... I know it's close, it's only a matter of time...

At the end of the season non of the top three took their PL games very seriously so our fielding of a second XI really makes no impact on the final positions.

However the start of our season we played well below our ability and it is there that we can look for hope. If we get a decent start this season we can be a lot closer. I think that Macca is probably right - it is an enormous ask to finish ahead of Man U and Chelsea.

He's got Evertonian written all over him. He never really has a good word to say about us and went asked what his favourite football stadium was he said 'goodison park'. Tosser saying as we helped him turn him into a very, very good player.

We were 9 points off the Chavs in Rafa's second season, which wasn't too bad. Which would have been enough to win us the league in previous years.
That was a season where we had a squad that was inferior to the squad we have now. I think we can go alot closer this year, also, it happened to be two years ago obviously, so hopefully, the lack of a World Cup and European Championships during the off season helps Rafa's teams.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

At least we are coming under any excess pressure, everyone seems to be writing of our title chances already. I did fear that as we have bought a real big name like Torres that the media would heap the pressure on us but thankfully that hasn't been the case.

I seem to remember we were only 3 points behind the chavs at one stage during last season, before our second bad run... and was it 7 or 9 points off the mancs..So even for our bad start and ****e away form we were at least as good at one point... So if we can start better this season and stick with a winning combination we could push the Manc and the Chavs all the way... Might even as it's been said split the fcukers..and end in 2nd...

The season hasn't started yet so concede nothing until we are mathematically out of it.

It seems we have already been written off by many. Wait until the boys are coming up the hill, they will be whistling different tune then

To be fair i want to see us win the leauge and hope we will. But realistically i can see us coming second to Man U. Thay will just be to good this year. But hopefully the boys will prove me wrong and ill be a little bit richer after all the bets ive had with my manc mates.
