Owner news: Thank you, Mark Teixeira

Mark Teixeira (tuh-SHARE-uh), former first baseman for Tom Hicks' Texas Rangers, just turned down $140 million dollars over 8 years. That's roughly £70 million and it all (minus 10%) would have gone to the player... Instead, he went to the Atlanta Braves. They then sent super-closer Eric Gagne to the Boston Red Sox and The Texas Rangers now enter a rebuilding phase.

More money for Liverpool!?! Let's spend it!

"Rangers owner Tom Hicks said he offered Teixeira a full-sized, eight year deal for $140 million. It included Teixeira's arbitration number for one year, and then seven years at $18 million per. Teixeira turned it down, and that was that:

'I've always loved Tex as a player,' Hicks said Tuesday by phone from California. 'I was personally involved in signing him and I wanted him to be a face of this organization, along with Michael Young, for the long term.

'I thought we made enough of an offer to keep him a Ranger for life. I'm disappointed he turned it down, but I think we did everything we could to keep him. Now, we've got some very good young players coming here and I feel with some good moves and free-agent signings, we can be a championship team.'"

Anyway, our owner in the news in the USA... I'm sure he keeps the budgets separate, but a man can dream... Thought it would be interesting to see how our owner's other teams are operating in the news.

The Rangers are one of the worst teams in baseball. The Teixeira & Gange trades are an attempt to rebuild the Rangers with young 'prospects'

The current team is going nowhere and has far, far too much money tied up in deadwood pitchers like Millwood and Padilla.

Texas already had one of the lowest payrolls in the Major Leagues, trading these two (Teixeira and Gagne) will reduce that further as they were the 3rd and 4th highest paid at the team. Takes some 15M USD off a payroll of 69M.

The guy they've got in return for Teixeira is quite promising though.

Surely Robert Redford (The Natural) was better

It really doesnt make sense to suggest monies spent at the rangers would be better spent here. It doesnt work like that as they are separate entities and the Rangers spend theirs with in reason as do we. All monies spent would be within their own budgets.

The Mets won last night, and that's all that matters.
