Hyypia wants to end his Reds stay with the title

Hyypia to end on a high

Sami Hyypia has hinted he wants to end his Reds stay with the title
By James Pearson Last updated: 02nd August 2007

Experienced defender Sami Hyypia is looking to end his extensive Liverpool stay on a high note.

The Finnish stopper, who has one year left on his Reds deal, has spent the past eight seasons at Anfield.

Hyypia made 23 Premier League appearances under Rafa Benitez last term and hopes to have a similar impact this season.

"I have one more year to go, and hopefully I'll play as many games as I did last season," he told the club's official website.

"After that, I'll see what I'm going to do. Is this my last chance to win the league with Liverpool? We'll see."

Despite heaving spending by The Reds this summer, Hyypia is keeping his predicted Premiership table close to his chest.

"I don't want to make any prediction about what we'll do this season," he continued.

"What I will say is that all the teams are going forward in building their squads every year, and we have to be in that race."

        I agree

I have yet to see any evidence on the field yet that his legs are going so he may just get that testimonial which he fully deserves

He's never been the quickest Sami, but makes up for it with his football brain, maybe just as he ages it becomes more noticable. Maybe we could start a "GiVe Sami a Testimonial Campaigne"...

ok i have a more controvertial view on sammi........

a legend, a great defender, a great servant to the club..

now far too slow and i am always worried every game he starts .. other managers can definately exploit us if he starts.. for me cup games only for our sami
"Sky and Setanta have the right to choose their games and it will be the same for everyone. So Mr Ferguson will not be complaining about fixtures and a campaign against United.

"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."

Not that controversial in the sense that everyone i speak to seems to say the same as you. I, however have yet to see his pace deteriorate as he has never had any.

I havent seen one game where ive seen him look less effective than he used to be.

its just i think opposing teams can exploit us more with him playing than they could with agger... thats really more my point, nothing against sami a true legend but i think sentiment has to go out the window now...

Liverpool Legend. I'll especially never forget that goal against Juventus in the opening minutes.

But unlike some of you i think he is still very useful. Agger still has a lot to learn. Also Rafa on occastions plays 3 at the back with wingbacks and for that system Sami is perfect

Sami is still one of the best defenders in europe. Obviously he cant play every week because his body wouldnt recover in time for him to keep his performance levels up.

                    He admits this himself.

BUT, the way we use him now, which he is happy with, he is in peak condition whenever he plays. I cant think of a centre half in the world who I would rather have as back-up. To have one of his quality who is happy to play a bit-part role is one of the reasons I believe we will win the league this season now we have added some much-need guile and pace to our attack.

I believe our back up centre half is better than our rivals first choice centre halves.

Good post. At the start of last season our defense was wobbly due to poor starts from JAR, Reina, Finnan and Carra. Agger was our best player after 10 games and Sami played well but copped it as well. My opinion was Sami was caught out by uncharachteristic mistakes by other defenders, inparticular Carra (he sorted it out soon enough).

Sami is one of the best defenders in terms of reading play i have seen. He is clearly the best in the air by some margin, and still is.

If he gets through this season in good shape i would hope we can entice him on for another one and give him the testimonial he deserves. Hopefully he agrees to retire to a coaching role with us.

We could do a lot worse

Nah. He won't win the Prem. You can quote me on that. - Sarb24

Think that's a little bit much mate.

I love Sami and at his best rivalled Desailly for the title of best centre back in the league. He was one of the very best in Europe.

He's not declined *that* much but, if it's possible, he's got even slower and he can be left horribly exposed in one-on-one situations. It's painful watching some grease lightning youngster race past him while Sami runs through treacle trying to get back.

I think he'll provide decent cover for this season but not the best we could hope for.

Hyypia is still an important part of the squad and offers us a lot of experience, something we'll find hard to replace when he does leave. I don't want to see him near Drogba or Rooney, but he can still own 80% of this league's strikers.
