    McClaren planning Carragher talks
    Jamie Carragher
Carragher has won 34 caps for England
England coach Steve McClaren plans to speak to Jamie Carragher in an attempt to persuade the Liverpool defender not to retire from international football.

Carragher has hinted he no longer wants to play a bit-part role for England.

But with England captain John Terry, Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate are doubtful for the friendly with Germany, McClaren wants Carragher to play on.

"I've had a couple of conversations with Jamie and I'll have another with him next week," said McClaren.

You can't close the door on anyone in this job

The England coach added: "Jamie Carragher is a very important player for England and a very important member of the squad.

"There is no way I want to lose him and keeping Jamie involved is my main aim at present."

Carragher was omitted from England's last game - a Euro 2008 qualifier in Estonia - and is frustrated by his status in the national team's pecking order.

"I can totally understand his thought process," said McClaren. "I've every sympathy with players who want to play and feel they should.

"In a way, he has been quite unfortunate. There are players in every squad who can be effective in many positions, maybe sometimes to their detriment."

If Carragher opts to retire from international football, McClaren said he might turn to Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell.

The 32-year-old defender has not featured for England since last summer's World Cup.

"You can't close the door on anyone in this job," said McClaren.

"It would be silly and foolish of me to dismiss either Sol or David," added McClaren referring to Portsmouth goalkeeper David James.

"I never said I'd do it and I've no intention of doing it.

"Last season was a very good one for Sol and with Ben Foster being injured as well, I will certainly be going to watch Portsmouth.

"I've brought players back in the past and as long as players want to be involved with England, that is great."

Before talking to Carragher, McClaren will assess David Beckham's fitness and the standard of MLS soccer on a trip to America this week.

McClaren said: "I know David has been struggling with injury and has not played yet but I intend to go over and have a chat with him to see how he is.

"I also need to watch an MLS game in the flesh and have a look at the standard - I need to see it myself."

McClaren will watch Washington's DC United host LA Galaxy on Thursday.

Can Beckham still play for England?

Following that, McClaren will travel across England to take in four games in the opening five days of the Premier League season.

Starting at West Ham on Saturday, McClaren will then head to Manchester United, Tottenham and Portsmouth.

McClaren will want to cast his eye over as many players as possible before picking his squad to face Germany in a friendly on 22 August.

The last thing i'd want for Carra is to play in the next game and be blamed and used as a scapegoat for the inevitable cock up of our national team.

They realise how important Carra is to them when Terry, Ledley King, and Woodgate are injured.

****ing ridiculous it takes the latter two no marks to be out injured for Carra to get a game.

Remember Jamie saying on the Talksport interview he'd play if England were "stuck".

So basically John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown, Ledley King, John Woodgate and Titus Bramble would all have to be injured for him to return.

Love him for quitting, wish Stevie and Crouchy would ****'em off too. They get no love from the In-Ger-Land knobheads. Stevie always played out of position to accommodate that cockney fat **** and they boo Crouchy and call him a freak if he doesn't score every 30 minutes.

Really, really hope Carra sticks to his word and tells McClaren to **** off. Carra strikes me as a proud man and I doubt he'll cave in so quickly.

Carra should tell this clown to **** right off and look elsewhere. Ledley King / Wes Brown are 'England' standard required to get him the sack.

Was that not exactly what HE did on Beckham until it backfired spectacularly.

I always said that bringing Beckham back was a mistake. Made himself look like a fool and a hyprocite.

I'm English, and an England fan, but I hope he sticks to his guns and stays retired. It's a lose/lose situation and he'll only be gutted at being 5th choice again when the others are fit.

There is no way in the world I'd go back if I was Carra. I'd tell McClaren to **** off and would let everybody know it too.

He has turned up to all the squads, done all the training and has been messed about more than anybody else in those squads. He has had him at left back, right back and in the centre of defence. When the team hasn't performed Carra has always been the one to drop out.

Its fair enough McClaren wants Terry and Ferdinand has his first choice but if one doesn't play, Carra should come in. He shouldn't start picking Wes ****ing Brown or Ledley King ahead of Carragher.

There is no way in the world I'd give up a week of my time away from my family to an England get together and then not get picked because the tit of the manager wants to choose somebody else.

Its gonna be Fernando and Gerrard if I get my way!
