Arbeloa impressed me again. Very tidy, especially considering he was playing out of position. Interesting decision to play him there and Riise at left mid, but sensible to start the season with a solid rather than spectacular formation. Pennant gave us shape, if not a great amount else, and that was the best I've seen an Alonso-Gerrard partnership look in about 18 months.

We'll be fine this season, I still think we may be a little short in the final reckoning, but I only really saw reasons to be optimistic.

I think as the Old Man said it was the fact we went for a win that was the most pleasing aspect. The side was attacking from the start which maybe suggests a different approach by Rafa. Last season I'd wager that the likes of Momo and Zenden would have played that game. This season we saw no sitting back.

If SG stays in the middle we will always look attack minded and the indications from Rafa are that with Babel and Yossi coming in there is no need for SG to switch. Now if only we could get Kewell on fire......

Overall a good solid start, we had more edge in our final third than we did last season away from home, but the fact remains we did nearly blow it through not taking chances, on another day we could have had six.
I really cant think of any negative apart from that, at home we will score some goals this year i guarantee that, adding the cleverness of Benayoun to that team at Anfield will enable us to create so many chances its unreal.
To the morons who want to Bash Dirk, **** off. He was probably the third best player on the pitch and he gets stick because he didnt score, neither did Torres....
Three points....as i have said previously it is all about the start, if we can beat Chelsea next week we will be in a great position to have a real run at it this year.

I was fuming when Villa equalized. We should have won that match in a canter, and hopefully we'll have a better ratio of goals scored / chances created in the future.

I was there. Liked Babel when he came on. The boy is damn quick. Kuyt and Torres should signs of good link up. Villa created nothing. All in all a good first outing and we got 3 points and we attacked from the off. Bring on the chavs
