Stevie, what a legend. Thought Arbeloa and Kuyt were particularly good today. Torres and Kuyt looked damn good for their first game together. When they get on each others wavelength they will be deadly. Disappointed again with Pennant. Reminds me of SWP... lots of skill, beats his man but no final ball, althought now I think of it he laid a few back nicely. Need more from him. Sorry, unless JAR is at left back he should sit on the bench. He is not a winger and I thought he was poor. Cannot take on his man and having a dinger of a shot will not be good enough. Where was Kewell? Anyway, a great start. Thought we'd blown it but what a free-kick!

What did Babel do in that game that was even remotely similar to the way Barnes played?-----------------------------------------------

I was well happy when Stevie G got THE goal, but my niggling doubt is that it should never have been necessary. he should have scored before, so should Babel, and one or two other chances went begging. I know it's just the first game of the season, but we need to sharpen up very fast for the Chavs next weekend.

Good result which is what we needed - priority number 1
However:
same issues as last season: no width of any note, lacked creativity in those areas at times , and wasted chances, and almost paid for it.
But like I said. JOB DONE. That'll do for starters. But I expect Babel and / or Benayoun to force their way in ahead of Pennant. The wide areas still concern me...a lot.

I thought it was an impressive peformance in the main, typically we made it hard for ourselves but really we should have been 4 up at the penalty stage...that will come with sharpness, Torres and Babel impressed me loads and I personally thought Riise played well at L.M, with a strong L.B behind him I think that would work....certainly would rather have J.A.R than not!
Good job, I liked our passion and think (i know its early and all that...) that we will really push on this year! Come on you Reds!!

I ended up watching it with some villa fans... who where reliably infomed by me that Gerrard would never score a free kick from that range...

Yeah I agree, Alonso will be expendable by the end of the season IMO.Originally posted by Morphorino View PostDisagree that it proved the theory incorrect that Alonso and Gerard can't play together (did that make sense?), couldn't help but think that Mascherano in the middle would have made things that bit more secure for us and give stevie more of a free role, they certainly wouldn't be my first choice pair away from home.
Torres played well given a few more games he'll be on form I think
Kuyt played well if a bit anonymous at times
Gerrard as you say is the man, I hope we're finding that bit of luck we need to carry us through the season
Carra was immense even though he gave the penno away, thought Agger could maybe have done a bit more to help.
Was bit concerned about our left back spot, l think it was easy to see how Heinze would have fit it into our plans today.
Overall decent show, but we do need to step up against the chavs next weekend and i'm sure we can do it...
