I think he might be suggesting that in comparative terms our 1st eleven has improved more than say Manure or Chavski's 1st elevens have. I'd agree there as we needed to improve considerably to give us a competitve chance. I don't think he's suggesting out 1st eleven are better than the others nor our squads..

    Just my interpretation

the first 11 is actually pretty good. not as good as now though but still mostly the same. its the rest of the sqaud that is a world away from now. pluy torres is a big improvement on barros

To be fair I think any half-decent manager could spend 140M and improve on some of the players we had at that time.

Yeah but many don't (look at Newcastle and Spurs).
How many could have won us the CL with that squad.

How many of those half-decent managers could get Alonso and Torres to join liverpool and prevent Gerrard from leaving for Chelsea

                Pretty good isn't it?

That side there would not make the top 4 IMO. The first eleven was pretty good but the strength of the squad was weak.

It's easy to overlook how awful we were in Houllier's last year. It was desperate.

Our improvement can be summed up on a simple level: Rafa has bought players who can play football, ie., they're comfortable on the ball and don't greet a pass as if it's the first time they've even seen a ball. We can argue over the merits of a player like Momo, but I think he's like bloody Johann Cruyff compared to Cheyrou, Diao, Cisse, etc.... It's scary to think of the money the club pissed away on that calibre of player.

There was a big points difference between us and the top of the table last year and the one before, but it doesn't tell the whole story.
