    Too many good players

Liverpool’s added quality poses welcome dilemma

Aug 14 2007 by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ today admitted the luxury of having “too many good players” at Anfield is giving him the perfect selection headache at the start of a new season.

The Liverpool boss says it is becoming increasingly difficult to decide his line-up given the quality now at his disposal.

But he has praised the players he left out of the squad at Villa Park on Saturday for their professional response to the disappointment.

Peter Crouch, Yossi Benayoun and Javier Mascherano didn’t even travel to the Midlands, but can all expect to play some part in Toulouse tomorrow.

Liverpool head to France for the money-spinning Champions League qualifier today, with Benitez sure to ring the changes.

“We can feel the team spirit is really good, and the only problem we have now is too many players, which is the situation we wanted,” said Benitez. “I need to check how the team is before I decide for tomorrow, but now we have the quality we need.

“It’s never easy to decide which players to change.

“But it’s good for the club and for me because I can see players working so hard in training and telling me: ‘Don’t forget. I’m here’.

“Each week, it may only be a small detail which determines who starts the game because a player might show be their quality in a training session or a practice match. This is the competition we’ve wanted.

“Yesterday I spoke to one player about the situation and I was really pleased with his response.

“He said he would be ready when he was needed and accepted the position like a professional. That’s the mentality we need.

“I say to all the players ‘be ready’ because they will all be needed.”

While Liverpool head into Europe in buoyant mood following their start to the Premier League season, Benitez is typically cautious.

“I like to go in the opposite direction,” he said. “We have played just one game. While I’m happy and pleased for everyone, if we had lost I would have said it’s not the end of the world, and winning is not the end of the league.

“It was almost a perfect start, but winning as we did could be even better. It will have a good impact on our mentality and confidence.

“You can get this at the beginning of a season, whereas at the end or middle of last season, people might have said ‘here we go again’ when Aston Villa equalised.”

Harry Kewell will be out for another ten days after a slight tear in his thigh.

“It’s not a serious injury,” said Benitez.

Why do I get the feeling it was Mascherano that said that.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

I'm guessing that one player was Crouch

I think it will cause a bit of problems with some player during the year.....

.....but this is what you need to compete on all fronts and you have to keep players on their toes cause if they dont play well then Rafa has another one or two players to play in the same position

That was my reaction too. Especially after the reference to Crouch having a show down on the BBC gossip column. Although every chat between a player and manager is a 'show down' in the tabloids.

Well to be fair he knows that if he leaves Liverpool it will be to a club that wont ever reach the heights that Liverpool do and wont compete for any medals, so he's better off plugging away at Liverpool.

Thats a bit unfair, his record with us and England is VERY good and I would expect some top teams to look at him if they thought there was a chance. Wasn't Juventus quoted as being interested not too long ago.

No idea, I think he'd be the last person to say it though as it stands, he was praising Benitez every week last season so I doubt he'll be asking questions of his place given he missed nearly all pre season.

Yeah good player, but i doubt the other top clubs in England would buy him

You'd think that with all the newspaper reports.

Not just that - Crouch has more grounds for complaint that Mascherano or Benayoun.

Masher knows the score and after his summer at the Copa America is a couple of weeks behind schedule. Yossi is a new player who has to earn the right to be in the team, whereas Crouch is coming off the back of an 18 goal season and has every right to expect to at least be on the bench - despite his poor pre-season form.

I don't get ya mate, given that Rafa had so much faith in him last season when all others didn't (Westham) and went to so much trouble to sign him then play him regularly, then get to the final of the Champions League final,as you say, he is not long back from the Copa America, or back full training, so it would be typically something, someone would say given the circumstances.
