Since when? I have never met any Irish person who refers to Ireland as Eire. When people ask you where you are from do you say Eire?

The description of "here" as the Republic of Ireland was seen as the breaking of the last link with the British Commonwealth in 1948. This was not, until recent times, always acknowledged by the British goverment and their continued referral to "EIRE" was seen as a snub to the recognition of our independence.

Lots of Brits refer to us as EIRE innocently and whenever I come across this I politely point out that this is not the term in common usage for this country. My point of view - but one shared by many Irish people.

Fwiw, I have always used Eire innocently, wiki seems to indicate it is the native tongue name for both your country and the whole island. Surely you should be proud of its use rather than using english words instead.
