Kop boss blames Chelsea for ref's blunder Rafa demands FA action on Terry & Co
    By David Anderson 24/08/2007

Rafael Benitez last night called for John Terry and his Chelsea team-mates to be banned for hounding blunder ref Rob Styles.

The angry Liverpool boss believes the Chelsea players pressurised Styles into wrongly awarding the Blues the penalty for their equaliser at Anfield with their behaviour during the match.

Benitez is annoyed because Premiership managers had agreed at a meeting before the start of the season not to badger officials and claims the Football Association must now step in.

He believes the FA should use video evidence to punish Terry and Co for deliberately putting pressure on Styles to make decisions in their favour.

Benitez, who could be without Steven Gerrard for 10 days because of his broken toe, claims this is the only way to hammer home the message that they can't unfairly influence officials.

Benitez is still furious at being robbed of two points and re-opened his war of words with Chelsea, saying: "People talk about technology and you could watch the video and see which players are pushing and pushing the referee to take a decision.

"The referee is in a very difficult situation and he was under pressure all the time from different players, big-name players, and it's difficult for a person to be calm and do the right thing all the time.

"I think if you used the video for disciplinary issues, it would be much better because all the players would know to be careful otherwise tomorrow they could be on TV and banned for three games.

That's important and it would then be easier for the referees. Every year it has been the same for the last 10 years and every year we talk about technology and refereeing.

"It's difficult to find a solution, but if you used the video evidence, and the players knew they would be suspended, then it would be easier for the referees." Benitez has accepted Styles' apology and claims Chelsea cynically piled the pressure onto him until he cracked.

He says this is in contrast to his approach and he tells his players before every game to respect the officials. "All the meetings we have are to try and help the referees to do the right things during the game and not to put them under pressure - players, managers, everyone," he said.

"But this is football and you have passion and it's not easy, but you must try to do these things.

Normally I say to the players to try to be nice and do the right things.

"So I was surprised the other day because far too many players weren't doing that. I've not see a lot of our players doing that during the last few years and you saw another team taking profit from the situation.

"That is the reason why for me it is important to support the referee." Benitez has forgiven Styles and insists he does not have a problem with the Hampshire official taking charge of the Reds again.

"I don't have any problems with him," he said. "I can understand that referees can make mistakes. He apologised and it's OK.

"I know I can trust referees here. They are nice people and they are honest. But if they are under pressure, we must try and support them rather than just push and push."

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

    Well well well.

I think Rafa's comments are 'tactically' spot on.
he has acknowleedged that Ref's make mistakes and can be pressurised by players / teams, but the way he has come out and said this is incredibly eloquent.

Officials know exactly where they stand with us, and it may just prove that giving them the extra respect, before during and after our games works in our favour during the course of the season

He needs to be careful not to look hypocritical because Carragher is certainly no angel in the respect of hounding referees. He obviously doesn't do it to the extent of the Chelsea players but still......

Something need to be done, that's for sure.

As it's now then you lose out if you don't hound the ref. As long as the PL or the FA don't do anything then nothing will change and the hounding will go on because the teams doing it will get the extra freekicks and penalties.

If I was a manager that is interested in fair play then preparing your team for a game must be wierd because you know that if your team play fair then you will lose out so for the best of the team then your team should hound the ref as much as they can because it will pay off in the end.

          Fair play, less points.
          unfair play, more points.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

His is right, but I would rather he wasn't so outspoken on other teams. If we don't hound refs (etc.) then we will get a good reputation and the football community will naturally argue on our behalf.

what about the ref is given the right to book the captain if he fails to control his team, ie if the ref tells the captain his team should stop to constantly complain about his every decision and he fails to controll them, he can get into trouble?

Carra only ever gets up in the face of Refs when they make a terrible decision, he gets a yellow and then walks away

spot on, leave the abuse to the fans

wouldn't take too many yellow cards to stamp it out.

Sure Rugby the captain can only speak to the ref.

Yeah fair point, but he does get pretty bloody animated when he does so. But yeah it's not as if he constantly hounds the ref at every decision.

Read it again and tell me where he mentions another team. He actually criticises our players. Rule number 1 - dont read the headlines!

As for actions speaking louder than words lets be honest it hasnt done us any good in the past.

I am really happy Rafa is doing this because we must fight our corner. Rafa is not just going off on a rant here, he's not that silly. You can be sure everything he has been saying is well thought out and meant to draw a reaction.

On this topic I support Rafa speaking out.

His quotes were very good, shame about the article itself.

Some excellent quotes from Rafa, he really is embracing this role in trying to influence things, no doubt the chavs will hate reading this as it will alert referees to their antics, or make them take more notice.
What ever happened to the 10 yard rule, where if a player is giving dissent, then we can move nearer to goal?
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

                            * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

They scrapped it for some unknown reason.

I think ManU and Chelsea wasn't that happy about it so that's probably the reason.
